In this immersive exhibition contemporary artist Adrien Broom (born 1980) invites audiences to experience the mysterious world of the forest and imagine themselves at faerie-scale. A photographer, set designer, and filmmaker, Broom invites visitors to enter a darkened gallery to encounter a magical installation inspired by the natural environment, faerie folklore, and legends. The artist activates the space with an oversized faerie ring—a circle of mushrooms that grows in the wild—and a cavernous tree that beckons visitors to enter. Drawing on medieval European folk beliefs and superstitions, faerie-friends are enticed to step inside the colossal mushroom ring, which triggers entrancing songs that infiltrate the circle and seduce guests to dance beyond time.
Newly commissioned examples of Broom’s mythical photography, shot in a forest in nearby Guilford, Connecticut, encircle the installation. Born and raised in Old Lyme, Broom’s work frequently draws inspiration from childhood, fantasy, surrealism, and themes evoking wonder. Her unique, enchanting vision for the Krieble Gallery is the perfect complement to the Museum’s outdoor Wee Faerie Village celebration this fall.

Join us for an engaging class for students ages 7 to 12. We will be reading "The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl" by Stacy McAnulty.
From the jacket: "Lucy Callahan was struck by lightning. She doesn't remember it, but it changed her life forever. The zap gave her genius-level math skills, and ever since, Lucy has been homeschooled. Now, at 12 years old, she's technically ready for college. She just has to pass 1 more test--middle school!
Lucy's grandma insists: Go to middle school for 1 year. Make 1 friend. Join 1 activity. And read 1 book (that's not a math textbook!). Lucy's not sure what a girl who does calculus homework for fun can possibly learn in 7th grade. She has everything she needs at home, where nobody can make fun of her rigid routines or her superpowered brain. The equation of Lucy's life has already been solved. Unless there's been a miscalculation?"
In addition to reading the story, class sessions will include relevant math and science lessons, and will also integrate personal finance activities. Register today!

Mendelssohn Konzertstück No. 1 for 2 clarinets & piano
Brahms Clarinet sonata No. 2 in E♭
Acclaimed clarinetists James Campbell and Alix Reinhardt – master and former student – will collaborate with insightful pianist Futaba Niekawa to elicit the luminous, songful soundscape of German Romantic works for clarinet... and clarinets. The 1886 Chickering concert grand, a piano contemporary with the second Brahms clarinet sonata, brings its own distinctive period voice to this engaging musical conversation. The concert duo by Mendelssohn unveils a once-familiar, now vanished world of virtuosic clarinet lyricism that enchanted mid-19th-century Europe, while von Weber's taxing, brilliant piece unleashes both fire and sinewy vocal line. Schumann's fantasies are familiar in a variety of instrumentations, of course, but we can count ourselves lucky to have this chance to hear the haunting clarinet version. Irresistible, no?

While Dr. Westchesterson is best known as an artist who dares to cross genres- the common denominator between all of his work is a knack for high quality songwriting. Whether he’s writing a hip hop banger or a yacht rock period piece Dr. Westchesterson’s journey begins alone at a piano. And in his twenty-plus year residency as the “house Piano Bar guy” at Captain Nick’s -Block Island’s premiere live music venue- The Dr. has honed his skills not only as a songwriter but also as a first-rate entertainer.
Weaving together a blend of storytelling, original music and covers by songwriters that inspire him Dr. Westchesterson has discovered the secret to holding captive an audience’s collective imagination. His finely curated repertoire of cover songs is a treasure trove of well-known hits and hidden gems by the likes of Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Billy Joel, Elton John, Leonard Cohen, Randy Newman, Harry Nilsson, The Beatles and The Band to name only a few.
With the release of his latest (and much buzzed about) modern-day yacht rock masterpiece, “Better Days Ahead”; D-Dubs has been performing full band arrangements of the album tracks with a band of top-tier musicians. However, it’s the stripped-down versions of the songs performed by The Dr. alone at a piano that allow listeners a taste of the songs’ main ingredients.
But no matter the scenario or venue- Dr. Westchesterson’s main objective is to make sure his audience has fun. So, when the flashy outfits, booming sound systems and flashing multi-colored laser-lights are gone and it’s just The Dr. at his piano, fun is served up in its most potently distilled form. Don’t pass up the opportunity to catch one of Dr. Westchesterson’s solo Piano Bar shows where -truth be told- he’ll probably still be wearing a flashy outfit of some sort.

Interested in reading books based in CT, or written by authors who have lived in the Nutmeg State? Our Mystic Book Club could be the activity for you! Our October book is "The Happy Accidents" by Jamie Beck. This book is written by a CT Author.
From the jacket: "While at a casino to celebrate her birthday, Jess Clarke proposes a pact to her reserved sister, Liz, and their childhood friend Chloe: the three women will say yes to any adventure that comes their way. Jess is mourning her recent divorce, so the other two reluctantly agree. Twelve hours later, they awaken to the shocking consequences of their behavior.
A viral video throws Liz’s career and reputation into question. A major loss at the craps table rocks the foundation of Chloe’s staid marriage. And Jess’s desperate bid to unblock her artistic creativity results in a life-changing choice. Staring down the crossroads, each woman finds her relationships—with herself, with each other, and with loves both old and new—tested. At every turn, they struggle not to let fear decide their fates. Will they give in, or will their misadventures lead to the greatest fulfillment of all?"

Reclaim Your Radiance: Fall Renewal Women’s Retreat

OPENING NIGHT EXTRAVAGANZA
Stravinsky | The Star-Spangled Banner
Strauss | Introduction of Also Sprach Zarathustra
Copland | The Tender Land: Introduction and Love Music, the Promise of Living
Strauss | Der Rosenkavalier Suite
Saint-Saëns | Symphony No. 3 (Organ) Simon Holt, Organ
The opening program of the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra’s 2024-25 season, its 15th under Music Director & Conductor Toshiyuki Shimada, spans two centuries and two continents. After standing for The Star-Spangled Banner—as arranged by none other than Igor Stravinsky—the audience will thrill to the theme from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey (and, more recently, Barbie) from German composer Richard Strauss’s 1896 tone poem Also Sprach Zarathustra. A trip to the Midwest of the 1930s follows: two movements from the orchestral suite based on Aaron Copland’s 1954 opera The Tender Land. The first half wraps up with more from Strauss: the suite from his 1910 comic opera Der Rosenkavalier. Following intermission, London-trained organist Simon Holt, a 25-year resident of southeastern Connecticut and Director of Salt Marsh Opera (among many other organizations), will be the soloist for a performance of French composer Camille Saint-Saëns’s sparkling Symphony No. 3 in C Minor, known as the “Organ Symphony,” dedicated to the memory of Franz Liszt, who died two months after its 1886 premiere.

Join us for a talent packed evening With Mystic Dead and Mono Means One who will be touring for their new album "Listless Playthings of Enormous Forces."
In 2018 a group of musicians got together for a once a month Dead night at the Captain Daniel Packer inn in Mystic,CT. It turned out to be a seriously good time that translated to more shows, more fun and Mystic Dead was born.
Deep dives into all things Grateful Dead coupled by the freedom to remain true to their own creative individuality has been and will always be the mantra of all 6 members of Mystic Dead.
Mono Means One is a psychedelic prog trio and the brainchild of bassist and composer John Ferrara, best known as the bass player and co-founder of the acclaimed world fusion band “Consider the Source.” Mono Means One’s sound contains melancholic melodies, rich sonic textures with Drum 'N’ Bass grooves and Mathrock sensibilities. Half composed and half improvised, the music is often dark, sometimes bright and other times heavy, oscillating between chill grooves to almost unbearable intensity. Originally composed entirely on the bass guitar, John paired up with Rob Madore (Drums) and Isaac Young (Keys), of Connecticut's amazing PX3 to borrow some of their “Futuristic Synth-Driven Madness” to help bring layers and textures to these compositions that fill rooms across the Northeast.
"Listening to Mono feels like taking apart a rubik's cube and put it back together through music"
