My First 55 Years
The Lyme Art Association (LAA) is pleased to announce the opening of three compelling exhibitions on April 18, 2025: Sunflower’s Bloom, Ship to Shore: A Marine Show, and Stillness: A Still Life. These shows, running through May 29, offer a dynamic celebration of artistic expression while supporting a critical humanitarian cause.
Sunflower’s Bloom is a juried exhibition dedicated to supporting Ukraine and its people. With the sunflower—Ukraine’s national flower—as its guiding symbol, the show highlights themes of resilience, hope, and the enduring beauty that flourishes even in adversity. All entry fees will be donated to UNICEF to aid Ukrainian children and families, and a portion of sales commissions from the exhibition will also contribute to this effort. Open to all artists and juried by Jenny Parsons, Curator at the Florence Griswold Museum, the exhibition invites artists to explore themes of renewal, endurance, and light emerging from darkness.
Alongside Sunflower’s Bloom, LAA will present Ship to Shore: A Marine Show, juried by acclaimed marine artist Sergio Roffo. Open exclusively to LAA members, this exhibition celebrates the marine genre, featuring a range of subjects from tranquil harbors to turbulent seas.
Completing the trio of exhibitions is Stillness: A Still Life, a juried show overseen by artist Justin Wiest. Inspired by the introspective nature of still life painting, the exhibition invites artists to capture the quiet beauty of everyday objects, offering viewers a moment of reflection amid life’s fast pace.
The exhibitions will be on view at the Lyme Art Association, located at 90 Lyme Street in Old Lyme, CT from April 18 through May 29, 2025. The Opening Reception will take place on Friday, April 25, from 5 – 7 PM. The gallery is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday, 10 AM – 5 PM. Admission is free, and all are welcome.

From Why Did Sarah Bernhardt Sleep in a Coffin? to The Invisible Circus of the Present Tense, Slow Dancing Is Easy blends humor and pathos in a genre fluid collection of short pieces that resonate with memoir, observations and fantasy chronicling one woman’s adventures over decades. Originally created for stage performance, the works make an exuberant leap from stage to page.
Written by Ara Fitzgerald, designed by Ola DeKorne, illustrated by the author’s whimsical line drawings and Peter Cunningham’s explosive photographs, Slow Dancing Is Easy is playful and inventive as it touches on love and loss in daily life and the search for resilience when confronted with today’s challenges.
It is intended for the general reader as well as dance/theater, poetry aficionados and performers seeking solo material.
Author Bio:
Ara Fitzgerald is a choreographer, writer, improvisor, performer and educator. Known for solos with original text, she revels in collaborations with photographer/filmmaker, Peter Cunningham, composer, Wall Matthews, Clare Byrne, Paris based choreographer, Martha Moore, and the honor to perform reconstructions of work by renowned dancer/clown, Lotte Goslar. A graduate of Connecticut College and Wesleyan University (MALS), she taught at Connecticut College, Trinity Square Conservatory, the National Theater Institute, and served as director of dance and theater at Manhattanville College. Her work has been seen on and off Broadway, in dance spaces and museums. When she told her grandmother, a retired vaudevillian, that she would pursue modern dance, her grandmother retorted, “A modern dancer is just a vaudevillian with an education.”

Foehl received a Grammy nomination for his song “Fly,” co-written with Brent Cobb and covered by country legend Lee Ann Womack.
Now residing in the Green Mountains of Vermont, Foehl continues to tour globally, sharing his music with audiences around the world.

Michael Wolff - Piano

Mike Clark - Drums
Michael Wolff is a renowned jazz pianist, composer and bandleader known for his virtuoso performances and innovative style. After leaving music school early to join the Latin-jazz great Cal Tjader’s band in the early ’70s, he spent the next two decades gigging and recording extensively. Wolff can be heard on over 21 recordings with a veritable hall of fame ranging from Tjader to Cannonball Adderley, Sonny Rollins, Nancy Wilson, Sheila E, Christian McBride, Tony Williams, and more. During this time, he even mingled with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, Duke Ellington Band and the Count Basie Orchestra.
In addition to appearances at esteemed global venues such as Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Birdland, Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society, Snug Harbor and Mezzrow, Wolff has performed with and conducted over 25 symphony orchestras worldwide including The Dallas Symphony, The Fort Worth Symphony, The Berlin Radio Orchestra, and The Atlanta Symphony. He has also performed as a soloist with The Memphis National Symphony and The Pittsburgh Symphony.
Wolff became a part of pop culture in 1989, when he began a five-year tenure as the musical director of the high energy house band on Arsenio Hall’s groundbreaking late-night talk show. This journey led to him accompanying saxophonist and Presidential candidate Bill Clinton in 1992, as well as backing musical giants including Ray Charles, B.B. King, Patti LaBelle, Whitney Houston, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Al Green, James Brown, Sammy Davis Jr., Jerry Lee Lewis and Warren Zevon. He also served as musical director for Nancy Wilson.
In the summer of 2015, a grueling four-year battle with a rare form of blood cancer had the pianist-composer on the ropes and flat on his back. He fell into a coma in the lobby of a New York hospital, where the prognosis quickly moved from doubtful to death’s door. At one point, the doctor asked his wife, award-winning actress, director and writer Polly Draper, if she’d signed a Do Not Resuscitate order. Through the haze of drugs and debilitating illness, Wolff lifted his head up and growled: “Resuscitate me!”
His sons Nat and Alex, in the midst of their ascent as two of the most talented actors of their generation, returned home to be with their father to comfort him. They played guitars and sang at his bedside, tapping into the sweet, winsome gifts that had made the Wolffs a famous musical family nearly a decade earlier, via the hit Nickelodeon TV series The Naked Brothers Band. “When I got sick, it was tough on the whole family,” Wolff says. “My wife really had to take care of me, and it was hard on everybody. “I guess it just wasn’t my time,” he laughs today, “So now everybody’s flying free, which is great.”
Michael Wolff documents these highs, lows and ultimately triumphs in his memoir, On That Note: a Memoir of Jazz, Tics, and Survival. Nominated by the Jazz Journalist Association in 2023 for “Book of the Year: Biography/Autobiography”, the bestseller details not only his rich musical career, but also his journey as an outsider growing up with Tourette Syndrome to near-death and triumph over cancer. Wolff often recites and riffs on sections from his powerful, adventurous and humor-filled memoir in both his solo and trio performances. His experiences also inspired him to write and record material for his latest record “MEMOIR”, to be released on Sunnyside Records in spring of 2024. Prior to “MEMOIR”, he has released 14 albums to both critical and popular acclaim.
Wolff is a recipient of the BMI Music Award, the winner of the Gold Disc Award in Japan (“Jumpstart” recorded with Tony Williams and Christian McBride), and the recipient of the Hamptons International Film Festival’s award for best film score for The Tic Code. In addition to The Tic Code, he has composed the scores to many other film and television projects, such as Made Up, Dark Angel, Who’s the Man, and The Naked Brothers Band. Most recently Michael wrote the score for the new Polly Draper film, Stella’s Last Weekend.
In addition to working as a clinician, Wolff currently serves on the faculty at New York University’s Jazz Studies program, where he teaches both ensembles and private students. He is a Yamaha/Bosendorf artist.

100 Watt Suns, John Cafferty and The Beaver Brown Band, The Hoolios, Whitesmoke, Soul Searchers, Brother Big Eye, Green Tea, Water St. Quartet, Crows Toes, and The Collective are just a few of the bands the members of The Troublemakers were playing in while this band formed accidentally in the summer of 2016. A band canceled on a local booker and and after a few phone calls, the lineup was assembled. The lineup includes the area’s most talented, in demand and seasoned veteran players.
Ronnie Lewis plays the drums and handles lead vocals. Sitting next to him is Don “DC” Culp who plays the drums as well. Together they create a devastating pocket. The always busy - and in high demand - Dan Sherer holds down the keyboard/piano duties. Bill Light handles most of the lead guitar work and backing vocals. The band is rounded out by the younger but already seasoned Josh White (rhythm/lead guitar) and Mike Palazzolo on bass.
The Troublemakers play music and have fun, that’s actually their only real rule. No egos and none of the other nonsense that, unfortunately, has become part of being a modern-working musician. It’s refreshing to see them having fun on stage, acting like they are in the garage like when they were kids and just playing music to play music!

Inspired by the lilting mariachi tones of several Ward Hayden & the Outliers nee Girls, Guns and Glory originals, this tribute to Doug Sahm and the Texas Tornados and other outlaws recalls how derivative Texmex music was of the British Invasion beat. Coming as contemporaries of the Beatles, Sir Douglas and the Quintet were the hazy vision of popular music seen through several cases of MD 20-20 in a Texas motel room by producer Heuy Meaux and quickly hit the charts in 1966 with She's About a Mover amidst the parallel success of the one-hit wonder 96 Tears. The sound came to rest in San Antonio and we've got the same question: "Anybody Going"?
In no small way, this is also a tribute to the tribute. Sahm's music and energy have been kept alive by his Texas collaborators through the continuation of the Tejano collective Los Super Seven formed just before Sahm's passing. RI and Texas have always had a musical connection and with a nod to the original but to distinguish our version that began at the Knickerbocker Cafe in 2018 we pay homage to both spicy texmex music and to Westerly's spicy culinary heritage of Soupy sausage with Los Soupermen.
The Knickerbocker will be filled with dancers and listeners alike for this annual tradition; this night featuring the incomparable vocals of Pat Halpin of the 351s with a krewe of Boston outlaws and Rory Macleod on bass who arranged this project and himself played behind Doug Sahm in Austin when that 'Cosmic Cowboy' hopped on stage with virtually every band! Hop on to the dance floor with us.
Yes, it's mothers day, so once you go out for brunch, bring your mom to cut the rug!

Gillian Welch’s rich and remarkable career spans over twenty-five years, and she and her musical partner David Rawlings are a pillar of the modern acoustic music world. They have been hailed by Pitchfork as “modern masters of American folk” and “protectors of the American folk song” by Rolling Stone.
After moving to Nashville in the early 1990s, Welch was launched into the public consciousness when Emmylou Harris recorded a cover of Welch’s “Orphan Girl.” Her career continued to flourish as her 1996 debut Revival , produced by T Bone Burnett, was released to critical acclaim. Firmly on the roots music map following the release, Welch followed up that GRAMMY nominated album release with 1998’s Hell Among The Yearlings , a stark duet record with Rawlings, further solidifying the duo as a force in the folk music scene.
For her work as executive producer as well as a performer and songwriter on the eight times platinum O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, Welch was awarded the Album of the Year GRAMMY, and was simultaneously nominated for her own Time (The Revelator) which Rolling Stone called one of the best albums of the 2000s and is widely considered by critics to be one of the best albums of all time. This release was Welch-Rawlings’ first on their own record label, Acony Records, helping to establish the duo’s fierce commitment to independent music.

Frank Viele’s brand of New England blues rock tugs at the heartstrings, pulling the listener on a surprise journey that transcends genre.
Yet even as he’s racked up accolades over the past 7 years — including New England Music Awards for Album of the Year, Male Performer of the Year, Songwriter of The Year (X2), and Live Act of The Year for gutsy, gritty tracks like “Broken Love Song” and “‘Til The Bourbon’s All Gone” — he’s rarely paused to savor the moment before moving on to yet another tour, album, or collaboration.
It wasn’t until the pandemic hit in early 2020 and he was forced to hunker down that Viele realized that time itself was the world’s most precarious, yet precious, resource.
At that time, Viele embarked on a writing-and-recording journey with Jimmy Nutt (Jason Isbell, American Aquarium, The Dead South) and James LeBlanc (Travis Tritt, Will Hoge, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Dylan LeBlanc, Kid Rock, Rascal Flatts) of Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Within this co-writing collaborative partnership, Viele approached each new song slowly, intentionally, and with an open mind, challenging himself to transcend the limits of genre and industry expectations.
In 2021, a handful songs that he had started recording in Connecticut, and finished at Nutthouse Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals, were brought to life in the 2021 EP “Time Is A Thief.” This EP won him the coveted New England Music Award for “Songwriter of The Year” for the second time and acted as a prequel to Viele’s upcoming full-length 2023 album.
In January 2023, the first track off Viele’s forthcoming, 13-song album completed in Nutthouse Recording Studios, “Hearts We Left Behind”, came out in January of 2023 and was featured on Boston’s Country 102.5 as their “Song Of The Week”. “Hearts” continues to receive critical acclaim citing Viele’s strength as a storyteller and his signature vocal delivery.
“Frank Viele continues to astound with his new single entitled “Hearts We Left Behind” and has once again crafted a classic. Viele is a consummate wordsmith. His songs contain magic dust capable of spinning webs of musical ecstasy.” (MyAmpMusic.co)
The “magic dust” they are referring to has been gathered from experiences on the road and in venues across the country. Viele built his sound and narrated his journey while constantly touring the United States, playing hundreds of shows each year and sharing the stage with artists such as John Waite, Jeffrey Gaines, Lee DeWyze, Zach Myers of Shinedown, Bob Marley’s Wailers, Howie Day, Xavier Rudd, Ingrid Michaelson, Tony Lucca, Pat McGee, and Blues Traveler, among others, since the release of his first solo album in 2015.
But Frank Viele’s musical journey starts long before that… Fondly listening to his grandmother play piano as a child and later reinvigorated as a teenager inspired by his older brother’s taste in music and an acoustic guitar he left behind when he moved to the West Coast, Viele developed a deep appreciation for a wide range of genres including rock, blues, folk, and country.
He began writing his own music as a teenager and quickly developed a knack for crafting deeply personal and emotive songs that spoke to the human experience.
After honing his craft fronting New York City based Jam/Funk/Rock Outfit “Frank Viele & The Manhattan Project”, Viele released his debut solo album “Fall Your Way” in 2015, which was met with critical acclaim including 2 New England Music Awards for Album of The Year and Male Performer of The Year. (On top of the Live Act of The Year Award he had received in 2014).
Stacking up additional accolades on the road in 2016, Frank Viele won the Deli Magazine award for “New England’s Best Emerging Folk/Soul Act”. He then released his second solo album, “What’s His Name?” which made it’s way onto the AMA Charts and Relix National Jam Radio Charts carried by the single, “Pomegranate”.
The Album, “What’s His Name?” won Frank Viele the New England Music Award for “Songwriter of The Year” which paved this Connecticut musician’s path to Muscle Shoals, Alabama where he began the next chapter of his writing and recording journey.
Viele’s music is characterized not only by his powerful vocals, soulful guitar playing, and poignant lyrics, but also its deep honesty. This is an artist who is not afraid of wearing his heart on his sleeve, and dig deep into the joys and struggles of life. He has been praised for his ability to blend elements of folk, blues, and rock into a unique sound that is both timeless and contemporary. Over the years, Viele has built a dedicated fanbase thanks to his dynamic live performances and his ability to connect with his audience on a deeply personal level.
With several albums under his belt and a growing reputation as one of the most exciting voices in Americana music, Frank Viele continues to push the boundaries of what it means to be a modern singer-songwriter. Whether he’s performing on stage or in the studio, he approaches his music with a passion and intensity that is infectious, making more and more folks take notice…one stage at a time.

Ken Peplowski - Clarinet
Tardo Hammer - Piano
Martin Wind - Bass
Phil Stewart - Drums
There can be few readers of The Clarinet who are unfamiliar with the outstanding artistry and career of Ken Peplowski. He is one of the finest jazz instrumentalists on the scene today. Russell Davies of BBC Two hailed him as the greatest living jazz clarinetist. The Siletz Bay Music Festival in Oregon referred to him as “the living Benny Goodman.”1
Ken is also one of the most recorded jazz players to date, with over 50 CDs as soloist and nearly 400 as a featured sideman. He has performed with Charlie Byrd, Mel Tormé, Rosemary Clooney, Hank Jones, Peggy Lee, Bill Charlop, Woody Allen, Benny Goodman and many other legendary musicians. Centered in New York City, Ken travels about half the year playing in clubs, colleges, jazz societies, parties, concert halls and festivals. He is a longtime performer on and consultant to The Jazz Cruise, and in 2013 was elected into the Jazz Cruise Hall of Fame. In addition, Ken is the artistic director of the Newport Beach (California) Jazz Party and the Sarasota (Florida) Jazz Festival, where he was awarded the “Satchmo” award for his “unique and enduring contribution to the living history of jazz.”2 Much of his work on the road is done with his big band or his quartet. Wherever he plays, Ken is received with great admiration by his audiences.
Immediately noticeable at a Ken Peplowski performance or on his recordings is his amazing technical fluency. He has complete command of the instrument at every tempo and a rock-solid sense of rhythmic drive in ballads, standard songs, and up-tempo traditional jazz tunes. His sound is full, rich and warm in all registers. When students come to him with an interest in learning how to become jazz players, he starts with the importance of breath and air support and works with them on the rudiments of a pure classic sound and even finger technique.
Growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, in the 1960s he heard Robert Marcellus in the Cleveland Orchestra and on recordings, and studied for three months with Ted Johnson, a member of the clarinet section in the orchestra. Ken’s main teacher at this time was Alan Blazer. He also “practiced like crazy.”3 His career in performance started with professional jobs at age 9 in the local polka band that he formed with his brother. This is where he honed his technique and trained his ear. A defining moment in his early musical life was when he bought his first jazz record with money he made playing in the polka band: Stan Getz, More West Coast Jazz (Verve Records, 1956). In 1978, Ken joined the Tommy Dorsey Band led by Buddy Morrow and went to work on the road. Three years later he moved to New York to begin a career of studio dates, concerts, recording sessions, and international touring. Recognition quickly followed.
What sets Ken apart from many other jazz players is his abundance of ideas and an abiding interest in exploring all types of music in performance. Jazz players know that brilliant virtuosity is only part of a rewarding performance, and that collective improvisation is at the heart of jazz music and has been since the earliest years. Ken is a catalyst for much of the dazzling interplay that occurs in his great ensemble jazz. He has a very quick mind and a telepathic rapport with the other musicians on the stand. The result is a rich collaboration that is the hallmark of every performance he gives. In any musical performance, the interaction of the performers is a critical component of a successful musical experience. With a defining emphasis on improvisation, jazz is perhaps explicitly reliant on the spontaneous interaction of the musicians, and, when performed by Ken Peplowski and the musicians in his groups, the results can be transformative. His duo albums with Howard Alden (Concord, CCD-4556, 1993; CCD 4654, 1995 and Pow-Wow on Arbors Records, ARCD 19340, 2007) and Dick Hyman (Live at the Kitano, Victoria Company, 2013) attest to the musical intelligence of two superb musicians playing off each other’s musical ideas.
In his performances, Ken has embraced a huge breadth of styles and periods of jazz. For him the entire century of jazz music has become an endless well of possible tunes to play and record. His albums contain traditional jazz tunes, selections from the Great American Songbook, bebop, big band styles, third-stream and avant-garde jazz and even ethnic folk and dance music. There is always a fresh variety of textures and styles. The quintet and quartet albums often include a few duet pieces and even some tunes performed on clarinet unaccompanied. These require a harmonic structure that can be realized and communicated by a single instrument. Occasionally the decision to record a work for clarinet alone happens in the recording studio. Ken likes the spontaneity of the moment and the challenge of creating something special at the moment the recording is made.
