The Lyme Art Association (LAA) is pleased to announce the opening of three compelling exhibitions on April 18, 2025: Sunflower’s Bloom, Ship to Shore: A Marine Show, and Stillness: A Still Life. These shows, running through May 29, offer a dynamic celebration of artistic expression while supporting a critical humanitarian cause.

All entry fees will be donated to UNICEF to aid Ukrainian children and families, and a portion of sales commissions from the exhibition will also contribute to this effort. Open to all artists and juried by Jenny Parsons, Curator at the Florence Griswold Museum, the exhibition invites artists to explore themes of renewal, endurance, and light emerging from darkness.

iLuminate has been a household name since we were called “The BEST NEW ACT in America!” during our run on America’s Got Talent in 2011. Maybe you saw us on TV or heard about us through one of our international appearances or saw our Live show in the heart of New York City. No matter how you found us, we’re just glad you did!
iLuminate is a company based on the fusion of technology and dance. This distinct intermix will reawaken your senses and imagination! We are a diverse team of experts and together we create a visual experience unlike anything you’ve ever seen.
Audiences will see dancers in electrified glow-in-the-dark suits performing dynamic routines and illusions on a darkened stage. It’s a show that’s completely unique to our brand and incomparable to any other dance performance.
iLuminate is the brainchild of Miral Kotb, a woman whose true passions in life are dance and software engineering, which is why you’ll see her both manning the keyboard and dancing on stage in our archive of video performances (which you absolutely should check out).
In 2009, Miral combined her two passions to create our patented iLuminate technology, the tool that enables performers, choreographers, engineers, technicians, stylists and artistic directors to produce explosive performances with customized wireless lighting programs. The results are extraordinary lighting effects choreographed with phenomenal dance moves that take viewers on an exhilarating ride.
You may have seen iLuminate technology in shows around the world — from Cairo to Malaysia and the United States to Hong Kong, we are racking up our mileage points.
We’ve been on TV shows like Dancing with the Stars, the X-Factor, Good Morning America, The Wendy Williams Show and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. As well as The American Music Awards, MTV’s Video Music Awards, BET Awards, The Nickelodeon Awards, Billboard, and Latin Billboard Awards.

GREG PICCOLO & Heavy Juice
Friday, April 25
Bring your dancing shoes
Show: 8p | Doors: 7p
Tickets: $20
https://knickmusic.com/events/2025/4/25-greg-piccolo
At age nineteen, Duke Robillard recruited Greg as one of the earliest members of what became the Rhode Island based powerhouse, Roomful of Blues. The unifying magnet within the group in its early years, 1969 -1971, was focus on the rootsy, retro, danceable, swing sound of the ‘40s and ‘50s. This “new” sound to teenage ears and the recall of this music to the older folks, filled dance floors all over the band’s New England home-base and eventually on the global stage.
For the next twenty-four years, Greg Piccolo had amazing experiences playing with and/or recording with such music legends as Big Joe Turner, Earl King, Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson”, Pat Benetar, Red Prysock, Stevie Ray Vaughan, to mention only a few.
As Roomful players would come and go, Greg’s twenty-five year contribution evolved to lead singer and bandleader, all the while being noticed world-wide for his signature “fat” tenor sound, unique sax style, and distinguishable vocals.
After nearly twenty-five years with Roomful of Blues, Greg sensed a calling to go back to his roots and develop his “heavy juice” sound. This “less is more” approach gave him the freedom to cover the gamut of his musical longings, which include traditional jazz, r & b, and rock’n roll. He had compiled a well of songs which demanded their own arrangements and band configurations outside of the classic “Roomful sound.” In 1994 he stepped away and officially formed his own band, Heavy Juice, which led to his first solo release, self-titled, “Greg Piccolo Heavy Juice,” on the legendary Louisiana-based Black Top label.
Following were two releases, Red Lights and Acid Blue, on the famous California-based Fantasy Label (now Concord), and his first all instrumental tenor sax release titled “Homage” on the Pennsylvania-based Emit Doog label.
His most recent release, “Who Did This?” is a tribute to his favorite sax recordings and includes an original recorded tenor instrumental.
Now at seventy years of age, Greg Piccolo is still practicing his horn every day, writing his own material, and traveling the world with Heavy Juice.
Piccolo is an example of someone who has always played from his heart.

The instructor will discuss the available methods and techniques, and introduce the sandpaper-on-glass method available in the Spark woodshop. Students will practice by bringing one of the Spark woodshop's dull chisels back to a razor sharp cutting edge.
Students may supply their own chisels, but corroded or damaged chisels may require methods outside the scope of the planned demonstration.
This class will focus on sharpening practices specific to woodworking tools such as chisels and plane irons. While many of the skills learned are also applicable to sharpening knives, the specific techniques of knife sharpening will not be covered by the instructor.

Caleb Hudson will astound us once again in the 34th season finale with his new ensemble, Triple Cortado, playing arrangements of standard repertoire in a miraculous trio of trumpet, trombone and piano. It might sound edgy to arrange Mendelssohn’s perfect Piano Trio in D minor, for example, for such an unlikely ensemble; again, we’re just turning the dial back to an old, common practice of arranging great music for whatever ensemble is at hand.

The ECSO will tie a red-white-and-green bow around its 2024-25 season with a program of achingly romantic duets from famous Italian operas—La bohème and Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini and Il trovatore and La traviata by Giuseppe Verdi—performed by soprano Sarah Joyce Cooper and Mexican-born tenor Jesús Daniel Hernández. The Eastern Connecticut Symphony Chorus will join the orchestra for “Va, pensiero (Go, thought, on wings of gold)” from Verdi’s Nabucco, the chorus of the Hebrew slaves, an anthem of Italian unification and, later, of other oppressed peoples. A special addition to the program is a version for soprano and chorus—sung by Cooper and the ECSC—of Nkeiru Okoye’s Inside Is What Remains, with a text by the composer, commissioned by Tulsa Opera for the Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Memorial Concert in 2021. The orchestra will also play the stirring overtures to Verdi’s La forza del destinoand Luisa Miller, the triumphal march from his Aida, and the intermezzo from Puccini’s Manon Lescaut.

Special Note and "Meet & Greet": We are honored to have Musician and Film Actor Alicia Witt grace The Packing House stage this season! Her career as a TV/Film Actor and musical Performer spans nearly 4 decades. My recollection of first seeing Alicia in film was her portrayal of the high school clarinetist (Gertrude) in “Mr. Holland’s Opus”. This is a very special evening, and as such, we are offering an additional Ticket for a Special “Meet & Greet” session for a private session with Alicia from 5:30pm to 6:30pm - prior to doors opening to the public.
Actor and singer-songwriter Alicia Witt has been acting since the age of 7, making her film debut in David Lynch's sci-fi classic Dune. She just finished filming the thriller Longlegs, opposite Nicholas Cage, set for a worldwide theatrical release in 2024.
Her TV appearances include: The Walking Dead; Justified; ABC's Nashville; Fox's The Exorcist; Law & Order: Criminal Intent; and Showtime's Twin Peaks; and more. Films include Two Weeks’ Notice, Last Holiday, The Upside of Anger, Mr. Holland’s Opus, Urban Legend, Four Rooms, 88 Minutes, and Vanilla Sky. Alicia is also a familiar face to Christmas audiences for her 10 holiday movies, many of which have featured her original music.
Witt spent 5 weeks in the Billboard Top 30 AC Radio chart with her single Chasing Shadows, off her 2021 album The Conduit, which she co-produced. Her newest release is 2023’s Witness, led by the title track, which will debuted April. A classically trained former competitive pianist, Alicia's music has been described as 'sharply personal, boldly melodic pop originals in the Carole King/Billy Joel vein' and ‘touching lost-and-found love ballads' (Philadelphia Inquirer).
Alicia has performed her original piano-driven indie pop music all over the world, including at the renowned Grand Ole Opry. As a musical guest, Alicia has appeared on numerous shows including NPR’s Weekend Edition, CBS' Late Show with Craig Ferguson, The Queen Latifah Show, WGBH’S Open Studio on PBS, Good Day Nashville, KTLA’s Morning Show, Good Morning Washington, and many performances on Hallmark’s Home & Family Show.

My First 55 Years
The Lyme Art Association (LAA) is pleased to announce the opening of three compelling exhibitions on April 18, 2025: Sunflower’s Bloom, Ship to Shore: A Marine Show, and Stillness: A Still Life. These shows, running through May 29, offer a dynamic celebration of artistic expression while supporting a critical humanitarian cause.
Sunflower’s Bloom is a juried exhibition dedicated to supporting Ukraine and its people. With the sunflower—Ukraine’s national flower—as its guiding symbol, the show highlights themes of resilience, hope, and the enduring beauty that flourishes even in adversity.
Alongside Sunflower’s Bloom, LAA will present Ship to Shore: A Marine Show, juried by acclaimed marine artist Sergio Roffo. Open exclusively to LAA members, this exhibition celebrates the marine genre, featuring a range of subjects from tranquil harbors to turbulent seas.
Completing the trio of exhibitions is Stillness: A Still Life, a juried show overseen by artist Justin Wiest. Inspired by the introspective nature of still life painting, the exhibition invites artists to capture the quiet beauty of everyday objects, offering viewers a moment of reflection amid life’s fast pace.
The exhibitions will be on view at the Lyme Art Association, located at 90 Lyme Street in Old Lyme, CT from April 18 through May 29, 2025. The Opening Reception will take place on Friday, April 25, from 5 – 7 PM. The gallery is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday, 10 AM – 5 PM. Admission is free, and all are welcome.

Artists

Caleb Hudson, trumpet
Achilles Liarmakopoulos, trombone
Ahmed Alom, piano
Program Summary
Felix Mendelssohn, Trio 1 in D minor, Op. 49

Band History—
The band was formed in 2003, playing clubs and festivals around New England and the New York area. We recorded our first album, THE ECHOBASS SESSONS in 2005, recorded live to ¼ inch tape! In 2010 we released our second album, SHOT HEARD ROUND THE WORLD,consisting of nine originals and 5 cover tunes, five composed by Thom O’Brien.
In 2008 Soulshot was invited to perform on the small stage at the Jazz and Blues Festival in Montego Bay, Ja. and so impressed the management that they were called back in 2009 to perform on the MAIN STAGE along side the likes of Lionel Ritchie, The O’Jays, Chicago, Maxi Priest and many more! While in Ja in 2008 Soulshot also appeared at the Black Mystory Concert in Kingston and at several other venues about the country.
Soulshot has been the backing band for Jamacian legend Ernie Smith on many occasions and has also backed the legendary Alton Ellis at the Rhode Island Reggae Festival, (Alton put a video from this performance on his website before he passed), Roger Robin from the UK, Doreen Shaffer, queen of Ska, and touring vocalist with the Skatalites, and Dalton “Screwdriver” Lindo on several occasions.

Rigoletto is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi. The Italian libretto was written by Francesco Maria Piave based on the 1832 play Le roi s’amuse by Victor Hugo. Despite serious initial problems with the Austrian censors who had control over northern Italian theaters at the time, the opera had a triumphant premiere at La Fenice in Venice on 11 March 1851. The work, Verdi’s sixteenth in the genre, is widely considered to be the first of the operatic masterpieces of Verdi’s middle-to-late career.
The tragic story revolves around the licentious Duke of Mantua, his hunch-backed court jester Rigoletto, and Rigoletto’s daughter Gilda. The opera’s original title, La Maledizion (The Curse), refers to a curse placed on both the Duke and Rigoletto by the Count Monterone, whose daughter the Duke has seduced with Rigoletto’s encouragement. The curse comes to fruition when Gilda falls in love with the Duke and sacrifices her life to save him from the assassin hired by her father.
This is a full-scale, traditional Italian production with beautiful sets and costumes created in Europe.

Teatro Lirico D’Europa
Teatro Lirico D’Europa was created in 1988 by the late Yves Josse, a former ballet divo and brilliant French arts promoter, and Giorgio Lalov, a young Bulgarian opera singer who made his debut at Teatro alla Scala, Milan, at the age of 25 while participating in Scala’s famous international training program for young singers. The collaboration between Josse and Lalov was a huge success in a very short time, resulting in tours with over 250 performances a season worldwide.
From the very beginning, the company established itself as highly competent in delivering traditional, full-scale productions featuring a full, professional orchestra and chorus, and professional opera singers who performed at the top national theatres in their native countries. The unusual chemistry of the company proved to be very popular with European audiences. Teatro Lirico D’Europa had completed over 2,000 performances worldwide at the time of Josse’s passing in 1995.

100 Watt Suns, John Cafferty and The Beaver Brown Band, The Hoolios, Whitesmoke, Soul Searchers, Brother Big Eye, Green Tea, Water St. Quartet, Crows Toes, and The Collective are just a few of the bands the members of The Troublemakers were playing in while this band formed accidentally in the summer of 2016. A band canceled on a local booker and and after a few phone calls, the lineup was assembled. The lineup includes the area’s most talented, in demand and seasoned veteran players.
Ronnie Lewis plays the drums and handles lead vocals. Sitting next to him is Don “DC” Culp who plays the drums as well. Together they create a devastating pocket. The always busy - and in high demand - Dan Sherer holds down the keyboard/piano duties. Bill Light handles most of the lead guitar work and backing vocals. The band is rounded out by the younger but already seasoned Josh White (rhythm/lead guitar) and Mike Palazzolo on bass.
The Troublemakers play music and have fun, that’s actually their only real rule. No egos and none of the other nonsense that, unfortunately, has become part of being a modern-working musician. It’s refreshing to see them having fun on stage, acting like they are in the garage like when they were kids and just playing music to play music!

Three Spring Exhibitions: Sunflower’s Bloom, Ship to Shore, and Stillness
Gillian Welch’s rich and remarkable career spans over twenty-five years, and she and her musical partner David Rawlings are a pillar of the modern acoustic music world. They have been hailed by Pitchfork as “modern masters of American folk” and “protectors of the American folk song” by Rolling Stone.
After moving to Nashville in the early 1990s, Welch was launched into the public consciousness when Emmylou Harris recorded a cover of Welch’s “Orphan Girl.” Her career continued to flourish as her 1996 debut Revival , produced by T Bone Burnett, was released to critical acclaim. Firmly on the roots music map following the release, Welch followed up that GRAMMY nominated album release with 1998’s Hell Among The Yearlings , a stark duet record with Rawlings, further solidifying the duo as a force in the folk music scene.
For her work as executive producer as well as a performer and songwriter on the eight times platinum O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, Welch was awarded the Album of the Year GRAMMY, and was simultaneously nominated for her own Time (The Revelator) which Rolling Stone called one of the best albums of the 2000s and is widely considered by critics to be one of the best albums of all time. This release was Welch-Rawlings’ first on their own record label, Acony Records, helping to establish the duo’s fierce commitment to independent music.

About Brad:
Hailing from Southeastern CT, Brad Bensko has been writing and performing music throughout New England since 2014, both as a solo act as well as one half of the duo Kat & Brad with fiddler/singer Kathleen Parks.
Drawing from his influences of 50s/60s Rock, Americana, Acoustic Blues, and Jazz, Brad fuses these sounds into his own style that is new, yet reminiscent of the past. His ventures have brought him to share the stage with acts such as John Sebastian of the Lovin’ Spoonful, and most recently, opening for Gordon Lightfoot.
About Kathleen:
Kathleen Parks is a fiddler, singer, and songwriter who brings joyful and creative energy to the stage and studio. She has been heavily involved in touring and recording with the band Twisted Pine and her duo Kat & Brad where she sings, writes, and fiddles for both. Her writing leans toward Pop, Folk, and classic Jazz, while her virtuosic fiddle blends and reimagines traditional and modern musical styles with boundless groove, and a playful improvisational spirit. Her deep grounding in Celtic and American roots music blends with her love for pop songwriting, funk rhythms, soulful vocals, and groove-based improvisation, making every performance unexpected yet familiar: a musical journey from beginning to end.
