Description

Playing on the distinction between decoration and functionality is a favorite theme of artists and artisans alike. In fact, the distinction between art and craft is often misleadingly said to be reliant upon it. The Lyme Artisans Guild presents an exhibition that delves into this intriguing concept, suggesting that in the realm of handmade objects, the division between decoration and function is a continuum without a clear boundary.

When human hands craft objects, the notion of pure decoration or pure function becomes elusive. Of what handmade object would we say that it is “just” decorative or “just” functional? On the other hand, this distinction can much more easily be applied to mass produced objects where deeper meanings are more clearly sidelined.
