Schumann Fantasiestücke, Op. 73

Mendelssohn Konzertstück No. 1 for 2 clarinets & piano
Brahms Clarinet sonata No. 2 in E♭
Acclaimed clarinetists James Campbell and Alix Reinhardt – master and former student – will collaborate with insightful pianist Futaba Niekawa to elicit the luminous, songful soundscape of German Romantic works for clarinet... and clarinets. The 1886 Chickering concert grand, a piano contemporary with the second Brahms clarinet sonata, brings its own distinctive period voice to this engaging musical conversation. The concert duo by Mendelssohn unveils a once-familiar, now vanished world of virtuosic clarinet lyricism that enchanted mid-19th-century Europe, while von Weber's taxing, brilliant piece unleashes both fire and sinewy vocal line. Schumann's fantasies are familiar in a variety of instrumentations, of course, but we can count ourselves lucky to have this chance to hear the haunting clarinet version. Irresistible, no?
