The Silent Service's First Hero
Bill Memorial Library will host author Ryan Walker on Monday, October 28, at 6 PM. Walker is the author of The Silent Service’s First Hero: The First Submariner to Receive the Medal of Honor. The book tells the story of Henry Breault, who received the medal in 1924 for rescuing a shipmate on October 28, 1923, when their submarine was sinking. The event will mark the 101st anniversary of Breault’s act of heroism. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event.
Walker served as a submariner in the U.S. Navy from 2014-19. After being honorably discharged, he works full time in the defense industry. He is also a Ph.D. researcher at the University of Portsmouth in the U.K. and has published several articles and chapters in edited collections on American submariners, American Naval-Capital towns and British Private-Men-of-War.
