Description

On October 13, three Groton historians will lead a 90-minute walking tour of the Starr Burying Ground, which is the final resting place of many significant figures in the town’s history, including nine soldiers who died in the Battle of Groton Heights. Groton Town Historian Jim Streeter, Leslie M. Evans of the Avery-Copp House Museum, and Barbara Nagy, former administrator of the Hempsted Houses in New London, will lead the walk. It will feature the stories of some of the cemetery’s most prominent “residents,” Grotonites who led lives notable for their adventures, good fortune, and altruism on tragedy.

The tour begins at 2 p.m. and will feature stories about colorful individuals such as Patriot Anna Warner Bailey and adventurer James Buddington. Tickets are $10 for non-members and $5 for members, with proceeds supporting the Friends of Fort Griswold Battlefield. Space is limited, and registration is required. Please visit our website for more information and to reserve your spot.

The cemetery, which began as the Starr family burial plot in the early 1700s and now has more than 3,400 graves, is located at 88 Lestertown Road. Participants are advised to wear suitable shoes and bring a jacket if the weather is cool. A rain date is set for October 20.
