 Campbell/Jensen

Saturday, July 19

https://knickmusic.com/events/2025/07/19-thorjensen

Ashley Campbell and Thor Jensen form a unique meeting of musical genres as the duo Campbell/Jensen. With Ashley coming from the world of country and Americana and Thor having a diverse background from rock to gypsy jazz, they create a fresh sound as a duo. Ashley Campbell, daughter of country legend Glen Campbell began her career playing in her father's band on several world tours and has found success as a solo artist in the country music scene; most notably with her debut single "Remembering" which she wrote for her father. Her original music has taken her all over the world, from China to Japan, to the mainstage at London's O2 Arena to opening for Kris Kristofferson and the Bellamy Brothers. She has also been spotlighted for her banjo playing with Rascal Flatts in the music video for their hit single "Banjo". Thor Jensen, a virtuoso guitarist and songwriter from New York has traveled many different roads. From touring the world with Hazmat Modine, playing Americana with Quiet Life opening for the likes of Dr. Dog, Portugal. The Man and Shovels and Rope, then onto joining the Stephane Wrembel Band, playing the music of Django Reinhardt, performing at Carnegie Hall and all over the world, all the while immersing himself in New York's jazz scene. Ashley and Thor started Campbell/Jensen in late 2021 and have been playing music together ever since. Both being strong instrumentalists in addition to the combination of Thor's deep baritone and Ashley's clear as a bell vocals, together they make a one of a kind blend. Their debut album “Turtle Cottage” is out now!

This beginner-friendly class is an introduction to the relief process, the technique used in the oldest forms of printmaking. By creating a single-color linocut print, you will learn the basics of relief printing. We will explore types of carving blocks, inks, and papers, and you will learn how to prepare your carving block, transfer your design, and carve and ink the block. You will make several prints, both by hand printing and using the printing press. (After this class, members will be certified to use the press for relief printing.)

Please read through the relief printing handout (found here) before class, and bring a simple design no larger than 5x8 inches. A good beginner design has a bold image, thick lines, and no fine details. Keeping it simple will help you avoid frustration and allow you to focus on the fundamentals of printmaking. You can find some great ideas by searching for free black and white vector art. Several design options will also be available to choose from in class.

Certification for Members: Printing Press Members who demonstrate proper use of the printing press can be certified for independent access to the tool.

Thanks to generous donations from The Frank Loomis Palmer Foundation , prices of our certification classes are greatly reduced.

Get your tickets today!

Ages: 15+

Please note that the class fee is non-refundable. Plan accordingly.

 Websites for Women Artists 101

This professional workshop series is designed for women, non-binary, and women-identifying individuals working within the arts sector, Wednesdays 7/16-7/30, 6-8p (last session Artist Talk date/time TBA). Focusing on informative discussion on enhancing artistic skills and creative opportunities, this will be a 3-Part Series, by the Pattagansett Art Center, in collaboration with Spark Makerspace, and the Lyman Allyn Art Museum. Participants will learn from guest speakers covering essential topics in creative development. This program is generously sponsored by Breezeline.

The program aims to empower creatives by providing them with the tools and knowledge necessary to thrive in the competitive creative landscape, fostering a supportive community that encourages collaboration and growth. Sessions 1-3 are only open to 8 participants, so please please register early. The 4th session is optional and open to the Public.

Important:

Class Fee is non-refundable. Please plan accordingly. Ages 16+

The class requires a laptop. If you do not have a laptop, please contact make@sparkmakerspace.org in advance, and we will do our best to accommodate.

Session 1: July 16, 6-8p

About the Creative: Biography and Statements

(Creating an about section through interactive activities)

Every website has an about section. This session will explore and engage participants and the power of short, succinct personal biographies. This is an essential framework for a creative practice and provides insight into intentions, themes, accomplishments, and context for an audience or viewer to experience your work. Through guided individual and group activities, we will engage in the creation of a general creative biography and a more body of work-specific statement. We will learn to better understand our own vision and motivations, along with important recommendations, as our artist journey evolves.

Session 2: July 23, 6-8p

The Impact of Visual Branding for Creatives

(Look, Branding, Documentation, Photo cube, lighting, documentation, pricing of your work)

In a digital world, elevating your creative look or aesthetic is an essential part of visual language. This session will dive into the importance of documenting artwork, developing a story, contemporary pricing, demystifying , and building a professional brand, and a touch on contemporary market analysis. Participants will learn the basic principles of photographing artwork, creating a consistent style, and understanding the process of establishing an online identity.

Session 3: July 30, 6-8p

A Comprehensive Approach to Building Your Artist Website

(Building a website, and Digital Footprint)

Utilizing the skills and techniques from previous sessions, participants will learn how to build an effective artist website. This session will provide step-by-step instructions to navigate the process of website creation, uploading your artwork images, and promoting your practice. Websites can seem intimidating, but we will work to simplify and demystify this topic!

Session 4: TBA

Women in the Arts Open Community Forum

To celebrate this series, we are hosting a networking event and panel discussion at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum. This Community Forum will feature participation from Suzie Ferras of the San Francisco Arts Commission and Creative IQ Studio & Gallery, alongside a panel of both established professionals and emerging local artists. Centered on the shared goal of uplifting and connecting creative women, the event aims to foster meaningful dialogue, build professional networks, and strengthen community ties both locally and beyond.

John Legend thinks Kara’s musical choices are “smart and cool”. Kara’s friend Rob once said: “If I ever get to heaven, I hope the angels sing like Kara”. In December of 2023, Kara independently released her debut EP “Enough”. The title track is a reminder that there are always brighter days ahead. Explore the fascinating characters, adventures, and tales of early American and Chinese trade with award-winning history author Eric Jay Dolin at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum.

Big Time Rush became an overnight sensation in 2009 from the launch of the Nickelodeon television series Big Time Rush. The show was a huge success and catapulted the group into real-life stardom, as they went on to release 3 studio albums and performed across the globe, including five tours from 2011 to 2014. In June 2020, the band held a surprise virtual reunion to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of their smash hit “Worldwide,” resulting in mass hysteria amongst their fans and in the media. In March 2021, all four seasons of Nickelodeon’s Big Time Rush were added to Netflix and the band went viral once again, increasing fan demand for an official reunion. Soon after, the band announced they would come together for two special live shows in New York and Chicago, both of which sold-out in a matter of minutes, blowing expectations out of the water and proving the power of the band’s devoted fandom.

In The Club

5p Show | 4:30p Doors

https://knickmusic.com/events/2025/07/27-youth-on-the-mic

Join The United Theatre and The Knickerbocker Music Center for our next YOUTH ON-THE-MIC, an open mic series for 6th to 12th graders who want to perform, sing or play music (whether original or covers) to an audience. Open mics for adults are plentiful, and so often open mics for adolescents aren't held at actual venues. We are thrilled to offer an alternative, providing kids and teens with a place to play and a community of music lovers eager to hear them.

Distillery University, the leading educational platform for craft spirit producers, announces its first Connecticut-based hands-on Workshop to be held August 1-3, 2025, at Dark Waters Distillery in Groton. This three-day immersive experience marks a significant milestone as the workshop will be hosted by a former Distillery University graduate who has successfully launched their own commercial operation.

Dark Waters Distillery, one of Connecticut's newest craft spirit producers, offers an impressive portfolio including 4-grain bourbon, rye whiskey, fruit brandies, vodka, grappa, and white whiskey, with gin, American single malt, and flavored whiskeys in development. The facility represents what's achievable through strategic bootstrapping and proper education – a valuable model for aspiring distillers.

The three-day Workshop covers the entire production process from grain selection through fermentation, distillation, aging, blending, and bottling. Participants will:

  • Work hands-on with commercial distilling equipment
  • Master critical production techniques and quality control measures
  • Learn regulatory navigation and business development strategies
  • Create and take home spirits they helped produce
  • Receive lifetime access to Distillery University's online educational platform (valued at $499)
