MASTERPIECES OF THREE CENTURIES: MOZART, BEETHOVEN, & SHAW
Mozart | Oboe Concerto
Erik Andrusyak, Oboe
Mozart | Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola
Stephan Tieszen, Violin
Alex McLaughlin, Viola
Shaw | And the Swallow
Beethoven | Symphony No. 8
Two days ahead of time, the orchestra will celebrate the 268th birthday of the one-and-only Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart by performing a pair of his three-movement works from the 1770s: the Oboe Concerto in C Major—originally composed for star oboist Giuseppe Ferlendis—and the Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola in E-flat Major. The ECSO’s oboe soloist will be Principal Oboe Erik Andrusyak, also co-principal oboe of the U.S. Coast Guard Band. For the Sinfonia Concertante—a genre that melds elements of the symphony and the concerto—the soloists will be ECSO Concertmaster Stephan Tieszen and Principal Viola Alex McLaughlin. Completing the program for the ECSO’s first concert of 2025 are an arrangement for strings of an exquisite setting of Psalm 84 by Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw, and the swallow; and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8 in F Major of 1812, which the master called “my little symphony in F.”

Dustbowl Revival
Saturday, February 8
Show: 8p | Doors : 7p
Tickets: $20advance/$25door
Dustbowl Revival has always been about pushing the boundaries of what American roots music can be. After celebrating over a decade of sonic adventuring and playing thousands of shows together in ten countries and counting, the group collected a devoted fanbase coast-to-coast. After throwing five of their own virtual Sway-At-Home festivals during the shut-down featuring nearly forty artists, the always evolving group of string and brass players led by founding members Z. Lupetin, Josh Heffernan, Ulf Bjorlin are excited to welcome a new wave of talent to the band, after emerging from a pandemic touring hiatus.
After spending years on the road, selling out hometown shows at LA’s famed Troubadour, headlining festivals and wowing crowds from Denmark to China, Dustbowl Revival never stopped making their joyful, booty-shaking soul songs and cut-to-heart folk-rock ballads that lift up their transcendent live shows.
Even so, with the bands emotional new single “Beside You” and 2020’s ambitious full length Is It You, Is It Me, they wanted to strike into new terrain. As they mined new energetic material from the place where folk and funk music meet, they teamed up with producer Sam Kassirer (Lake Street Dive, Josh Ritter) and engineer Brian Joseph (Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens). The latest album strikes a more personal note than ever before, representing the latest stage in a band that never stops exploring new sounds.
Many of the songs feel like small theater pieces coming to life verse by verse. It’s the yin-yang conversational harmony that is the true specialty of lead songwriter and singer Z. Lupetin, who also doubles as a playwright and recently wrote the music for a Greek tragedy set in Gold Rush era California. While longtime co-lead Liz Beebe has stepped away from the band after a long run, an amazing young talent in Lashon Halley has stepped in to bring new life to the songs, matching Lupetin’s intense vocal range with her own.
With a big brass-and-strings band building around the voices, Is It You, Is It Me isn’t afraid to explore the personal and political tension that the group may have shied away from facing before. The album tackles uneasy topics, often where the political feels personal, especially in the defiant “Get Rid of You,” which was inspired by the student activists who emerged from the tragic Parkland High School shooting in Florida. The ominous driving brass groove of “Enemy,” hones in on a painful generational split between a daughter and her parents who may have voted in a tyrant, and have become strangers to her. This yearning search for common ground pervades the record as a whole.
Where the band really sets on a new course is on lushly cinematic, orchestrated set pieces like “Mirror,” “Runaway” and, most notably, the current fan favorite and live showstopper “Sonic Boom,” about the struggle to reveal who you really are in the hidden, rose-colored world of social media. There’s a new widescreen expansiveness to these songs that wouldn’t be out of place in a packed arena or orchestra hall with a full neon light show. Acting like a nimble rock orchestra, during the recording process, each member played multiple instruments, and the group brought in new musicians on symphonic brass, and local friends to sing as a spur-of-the-moment choir.
If one thing is clear, Is It You, Is It Me represents another large leap forward for Dustbowl Revival, coming after their acclaimed self-titled 2017 album. Produced by Grammy-winner Ted Hutt (Old Crow Medicine Show, Drop Kick Murphy’s), it transitioned the group from a “roots dance party band” that continues to thrive on the festival circuit, to a nuanced ensemble embracing more soulful territory without losing their original fire. That self-titled record was a direct bridge to the newest work, rising number to one on the Amazon Americana chart and featuring a funky favorite “Honey I Love You” where the band joyfully teaming up with blues master Keb Mo’. Their heartache folk number “Got Over”, surprised the band by racking up over seven million streams and counting online. “Beside You” stayed in the Americana charts for months and “Enemy” became a staple on SiriusXM, especially during the 2020 election. To top it off, Billboard Magazine added about that Is It You, Is It Me is “the biggest sonic work of the Venice, Calif.-based troupe’s career.”
Dustbowl Revival’s story started humbly. Nearly thirteen years ago Z. Lupetin, a Chicago native who attended college in Michigan came to L.A. to be a screenwriter, grew disillusioned with his job in advertising, and placed a hopeful ad on Craigslist. He sought to find fellow musicians who shared his roving love of Louis Armstrong, Bob Wills, Old Crow Medicine Show, Paul Simon, Aretha Franklin and the brass bands of New Orleans, but also wanted to write songs like Americana pioneers Wilco, Lucinda Williams and even Bruce Springsteen. There are still players in the group who responded to that initial odd quest. New talent on electric guitar, piano and more are joining in for 2021.
“Maybe we don’t know where this journey will take us or how long it will last,” acknowledges Lupetin, “That’s my take on the importance of what we try to do. Music elevates us, lifts us up, makes us change our minds, takes us out of our comfort zones. If just one person can be moved by just one song, that’s enough.”

A CALL FOR PEACE
Nazaykinskaya | World Premiere
Wieniawski | Violin Concerto No. 2
Kinga Augustyn, Violin
Tchaikovsky | Symphony No. 4
The ECSO’s February concert, a call for peace in Eastern Europe, will begin with a world premiere by Polina Nazaykinskaya, a graduate of Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Conservatory College and the Yale School of Music. Next, Polish violinist Kinga Augustyn, who made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2008, will be the soloist for her compatriot Henryk Wieniawski’s virtuosic Violin Concerto No. 2 in D Minor, which premiered in St. Petersburg in 1862 with Wieniawski as soloist. After intermission, Music Director & Conductor Toshiyuki Shimada will conduct Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s powerful Symphony No. 4 in F Minor. In composing his “Fate Symphony,” Tchaikovsky had Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Fate Symphony” in mind (its first-movement fanfare recalls the famous “duh-duh-duh-DUM” from Beethoven’s Fifth). The Tchaikovsky piece was too advanced for some tastes at its U.S. premiere in 1890, a New York Post reviewer wrote: “If Tchaikovsky had called his symphony ‘A Sleigh Ride Through Siberia’ no one would have found this title inappropriate.”

Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day –
Canada’s reigning couple of Celtic music comes to the Garde with their spectacular Cape Breton fiddling.
From a young age, both Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy have had music in their lives so it’s no surprise that it was their passion for the fiddle that first brought them together. The duo married in 2002, and in the years following have welcomed their 7 children – Mary Frances, Michael, Clare, Julia, Alec, Sadie, & Maria — who have joined them on their tours, some of which also being a part of the show with their own exceptional talents.
Both Natalie and Donnell have strong beliefs that the farm they uphold is a key component of their children’s education and “running the farm is a great counterpoint to life on the road” as Leahy puts it. As Canada’s leading duo of Celtic music, MacMaster and Leahy have surpassed many milestones together and achieved a wealth of accomplishments and awards from JUNO’s and the East Coast Music Awards to their very own anticipated Christmas tour, as well as honorary doctorates from Trent University and various other honorary degrees, and a Road Gold Award from the Canadian Independent Music Association.
Their synergy was brilliantly showcased on the pairs first recorded collaboration, 2015’s Bob Ezrin produced album One, a crowning achievement complementing combined album sales of over one million.
Since then, the couple have released two more records, including their most recent album, Canvas, which was released earlier this year. MacMaster explains their journey in the creation of Canvas as “indulging in full musical freedom, throwing patterns of the past aside. With a few challenges along the way, it was a delight from beginning to end”.
With Yo-Yo Ma, Alison Krauss, Bela Fleck, Shania Twain, Michael MacDonald, and The Chieftans as collaborators, to name a few, they have captivated audiences stretching from Sydney, Nova Scotia to Sydney, Australia.

FANFARE FOR LIFE & SPRING
Williams (James Kimmo) | Fanfare for Life
Mazzoli | These Worlds in Us
Prokofiev | Piano Concerto No. 3
Adam Adov, Piano
Schumann | Symphony No. 1 (Spring)
Taking place on National Vietnam War Veterans Day, the ECSO’s March concert is named for the opening piece, Fanfare for Life, written in 1994 by Vietnam veteran and former Army Band member James “Kimo” Williams. With Gary Sinise, Williams founded the Lt. Dan Band to entertain the troops and raise funds for disabled vets. The program will continue with two haunting works from 70 years apart: These Worlds in Usof 2006 by Missy Mazzoli, Musical America’s 2022 Composer-of-the-Year, and Samuel Barber’s 1936 Adagio for Strings. Appropriately, since the day before is World Piano Day— the 88th day of the year, for the instrument’s 88 keys—the ECSO will perform Sergei Prokofiev’s excitingly modern Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Major from 1921. The soloist is Adam Adov, a Boston Conservatory at Berklee student who won the ECSO’s 2024 Instrumental Competition. Concluding the concert will be Robert Schumann’s sprightly Symphony No. 1 in B-flat Minor, known as the “Spring Symphony,” written in 1841.

This group offers a sophisticated performance ranging from soaring ballads like Desperado, Wasted Time and Best of My Love, to country rockers like Lyin’ Eyes, Take It Easy and Peaceful Easy Feeling, and the heavy rockers like Victim of Love and Hotel California. With sweet vocal harmonies and jangling guitars, “ Another Tequila Sunrise ” captures the LIVE experience of the Eagles and beyond.
Eagles Tribute Band, ANOTHER TEQUILA SUNRISE has been performing to sell-out crowds all over the country for nearly twenty years. The thunderous applause and standing ovations emphasize that this group is the premier Eagles Tribute band of the USA.
ANOTHER TEQUILA SUNRISE is America’s premier Tribute to the Eagles. Since 2001, this New England based tribute band has been delighting sell-out crowds across the country with a catalog of music that encompasses the classics and deep cuts from the Eagles’ studio collection, as well as the biggest hits from the solo careers of Glenn Frey, Don Henley, and Joe Walsh.
And they do this with an unparalleled commitment to the music. Another Tequila Sunrise has gone beyond the realm of understanding “how” this music was made. Yes, their ability to recreate these iconic studio sounds does not go unnoticed; but what really sets them apart is their ability to recreate the Eagles ’ LIVE experience.
And to do that, one must understand not only “how” the music was made, but also “why”. Why does Henley alter his drumming pattern ever-so-slightly? Why does Felder choose this particular lick or passage over another? Uncovering these notions is crucial to peeling back the layers of these timeless songs, the key to improvising like an Eagle, and the secret to delivering a painstakingly authentic Eagles LIVE experience…..and this all-star lineup has it in spades.
So, do yourself a favor; grab a pair of front-row tickets, and let Another Tequila Sunrise transport you back to a warm night in the summer of ’77, on a dark desert highway, cool wind in your hair.

iLuminate has been a household name since we were called “The BEST NEW ACT in America!” during our run on America’s Got Talent in 2011. Maybe you saw us on TV or heard about us through one of our international appearances or saw our Live show in the heart of New York City. No matter how you found us, we’re just glad you did!
iLuminate is a company based on the fusion of technology and dance. This distinct intermix will reawaken your senses and imagination! We are a diverse team of experts and together we create a visual experience unlike anything you’ve ever seen.
Audiences will see dancers in electrified glow-in-the-dark suits performing dynamic routines and illusions on a darkened stage. It’s a show that’s completely unique to our brand and incomparable to any other dance performance.
iLuminate is the brainchild of Miral Kotb, a woman whose true passions in life are dance and software engineering, which is why you’ll see her both manning the keyboard and dancing on stage in our archive of video performances (which you absolutely should check out).
In 2009, Miral combined her two passions to create our patented iLuminate technology, the tool that enables performers, choreographers, engineers, technicians, stylists and artistic directors to produce explosive performances with customized wireless lighting programs. The results are extraordinary lighting effects choreographed with phenomenal dance moves that take viewers on an exhilarating ride.
You may have seen iLuminate technology in shows around the world — from Cairo to Malaysia and the United States to Hong Kong, we are racking up our mileage points.
We’ve been on TV shows like Dancing with the Stars, the X-Factor, Good Morning America, The Wendy Williams Show and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. As well as The American Music Awards, MTV’s Video Music Awards, BET Awards, The Nickelodeon Awards, Billboard, and Latin Billboard Awards.

Caleb Hudson will astound us once again in the 34th season finale with his new ensemble, Triple Cortado, playing arrangements of standard repertoire in a miraculous trio of trumpet, trombone and piano. It might sound edgy to arrange Mendelssohn’s perfect Piano Trio in D minor, for example, for such an unlikely ensemble; again, we’re just turning the dial back to an old, common practice of arranging great music for whatever ensemble is at hand.
Artists
Triple Cortado Trio
Caleb Hudson, trumpet
Achilles Liarmakopoulos, trombone
Ahmed Alom, piano
Program Summary
Felix Mendelssohn, Trio 1 in D minor, Op. 49
Johann Strauss, Die Fledermaus Overture
Leonard Bernstein, from West Side Story

LOVE AND HOPE, ITALIAN STYLE
Puccini & Verdi | opera duets, excerpts, & overtures
featuring Eastern CT Symphony Chorus
Sarah Joyce Cooper, Soprano
Jesus Daniel Hernandez, Tenor
Okoye | Inside Is What Remains
The ECSO will tie a red-white-and-green bow around its 2024-25 season with a program of achingly romantic duets from famous Italian operas—La bohème and Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini and Il trovatore and La traviata by Giuseppe Verdi—performed by soprano Sarah Joyce Cooper and Mexican-born tenor Jesús Daniel Hernández. The Eastern Connecticut Symphony Chorus will join the orchestra for “Va, pensiero (Go, thought, on wings of gold)” from Verdi’s Nabucco, the chorus of the Hebrew slaves, an anthem of Italian unification and, later, of other oppressed peoples. A special addition to the program is a version for soprano and chorus—sung by Cooper and the ECSC—of Nkeiru Okoye’s Inside Is What Remains, with a text by the composer, commissioned by Tulsa Opera for the Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Memorial Concert in 2021. The orchestra will also play the stirring overtures to Verdi’s La forza del destinoand Luisa Miller, the triumphal march from his Aida, and the intermezzo from Puccini’s Manon Lescaut.
