“I wanna feel that moment / When the song can find me
I wanna feel that moment / When the song can save me”
from “Where the Song Will Find Me”
Lucinda Williams’ music has gotten her through her darkest days. It’s been that way since growing up amid family chaos in the Deep South, as she recounts in her candid new memoir, Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets I told You. Over the past two years, it’s been the force driving her recovery from a debilitating stroke she suffered on November 17, 2020, at age 67. Her masterful, multi-Grammy-winning songwriting has never deserted her. To wit, her stunning, sixteenth studio album, Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart, brims over with some of the best work of her career. And though Williams can no longer play her beloved guitar – a constant companion since age 12 – her distinctive vocals sound better than ever.

“Proving the axiom, you get what you give, Local Honey gives an outstandingly inspired performance.” With music that attempts to reconcile through melody and poetry, the fine lines that stand in tenuous balance between love and artistic passion, Local Honey fills your ears with a certain and captivating empathy for the nuances that comprise the grey areas of life. The listener will find themselves dancing up a sweat, channeling positive vibrations and a profound zeal for living, and then a few songs later, dabbing at their eyes with a sudden reminder of the strength and sorrow that is a part of everyone’s stories.

Join us for an engaging class for students ages 7 to 12. We will be reading "The Forbidden Library" by Django Wexler.
From the jacket: "When Alice's father disappears in a shipwreck, she is sent to live with her uncle Geryon—an uncle she's never heard of and knows nothing about. He lives in an enormous manor with a massive library that is off-limits to Alice. But then she meets a talking cat. And, even for a rule-follower, when a talking cat sneaks you into a forbidden library and introduces you to an arrogant boy who dares you to open a book, it's hard to resist. Especially if you're a reader to begin with. Soon Alice finds herself INSIDE the book, and the only way out is to defeat the creature imprisoned within. It seems Uncle Geryon is more than he says he is. But then, so is Alice."
In addition to reading the story, class sessions will include relevant math and science lessons and will also integrate personal finance activities. Register today!

MAHLER’S THIRD SYMPHONY: FOR THE CHILDREN
Mahler | Symphony No. 3
Women from ECSC
Children’s Chorus
Janna Baty, Mezzosoprano
The second concert of the ECSO’s 2024-25 season honors World Children’s Day, three days earlier, which marks the date when the U.N. General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, in 1989. A single work will be performed: Gustav Mahler’s overwhelmingly moving Symphony No. 3 in D Minor, completed in 1896. Mahler called this monumental instrumental and choral composition—the first movement of which is almost a symphony in itself—“a summer’s midday dream.” Joining the orchestra for this not-to-be-missed performance will be mezzo-soprano Janna Baty, a Yale School of Music faculty member; the women of the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Chorus, led by Music Director Dr. Daniel McDavitt; and a children’s chorus. Mahler had two daughters with his wife Alma: Maria Anna, who died of scarlet fever and diphtheria at age 4; and Anna, nicknamed “Gucki,” who became a sculptor and died shortly before her 84th birthday in 1988.

The THE BAND Band presents a celebration of The Last Waltz ,
bringing to life one of the most historic concerts of the rock era.
On Thanksgiving Day in 1976, concertgoers packed San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom to witness The Last Waltz – the farewell performance of The Band’s legendary 16-year career. The group, who had originally come to worldwide attention as Bob Dylan’s backing band, had gone on to record eight albums on their own that featured such classic songs as “The Weight,” “Up on Cripple Creek,” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.”
The farewell party they hosted that Thanksgiving night featured a who’s who of rock royalty from Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Eric Clapton to Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell and Ronnie Hawkins. “It was one of the most incredible concerts ever held,” says Gary Solomon, co-founder of the Rockland County, NY based tribute act The THE BAND Band, who happened to be in the audience that night!
The THE BAND Band recreates the music and the magic of that Thanksgiving evening with The Last Waltz Celebration, performing The Band’s most beloved songs and enlisting a dozen guest musicians, including a horn section, to the cover numerous artists and songs featured in the original concert. The lineup includes fiddle player Larry Packer, who played with The Band at the original concert in 1976. For Solomon, the show resonates on a personal level. “Having been at The Last Waltz on Thanksgiving Day nearly a half century ago, and now performing it with my tribute band, really feels like things have come full circle.”

Hailing from a family of talented musicians, Big Lux discovered the violin and saxophone at a young age. Trained classically in the Suzuki method, he spent school days with brass in his hands and evenings with strings beneath his fingers. He learned other instruments, but it was the violin that called him loudest. Answering that call was the first step in a journey that put him on musical stages around the world, found him leading social justice events, and earned him an appearance at TEDx Providence.
The next step brought him to West Point Military Academy, where he began a military career that spanned five continents and multiple war zones, his violin always near to hand. He won talent shows in Afghanistan, played for troops in Iraq, and fused Hip Hop and Soul music in Seoul. In Chasing Bombs, a song he wrote and performed for his original EP Major, he describes his first tour in Iraq. It’s an honest, unapologetic account of his deployment that doesn’t spare listeners from the emotional authenticity of a combat veteran.
Lux used his military experience to grow as both an artist and as a person. Four years in Korea introduced him to an entirely new culture, one where he refined his style and his grasp on the Chinese language, a subject he studied at West Point. He embraced the local Performing Arts culture, playing gigs when he wasn’t training soldiers to chase bombs of their own. His time in Korea important in his evolution as a performer, and it marked the beginning of the phenomenon we now know as Big Lux. He founded Bold Coast, the winner of the Seoul Expat’s 2015 Battle of the Bands and headliner for the city’s St. Patrick’s Day Festival. As a solo artist he made the Korea Times and was featured on the internationally-broadcast Armed Forces Network, both on television and radio.
The next stop was Miami, Florida, where he obtained his MBA from the University of Miami. Much like Korea and D.C., Miami left an imprint on him as a performer, but this time in a Latin flavor. His music became more energetic, brimming with electricity and excitement like the South Beach nightclubs in which he played. His cover of Despacito resonated with crowds, not only on dance floors but also online, and highlighted his ability to lend the violin to new genres and cultures. It was electric, and he played it among the crowd, standing atop stools and dancing along bar tops. He wasn’t just a musician; he’d evolved into a charged performer the likes of which Miami hadn’t seen with strings and a bow before. He had become Big Lux.
Fast forward two years. He has a Master’s Degree in Business, a great job with a Commercial Real Estate Developer and a Miami apartment with a water view. The next step in his journey was obvious.
While it may seem crazy to some, the plan is perfectly in keeping in Big Lux’s go-big-or-go-home philosophy. The same ambition and confidence that inspired him to hit the reset button on his “adult” life drives every show he plays, every song he writes and every stroke of horsehair across the strings. It’s a part of his story, and a big part of being Big Lux.
Today Big Lux lives in Rhode Island, though he frequently travels the east coast playing shows from Miami to New Hampshire. He continues to tour Korea annually, staying in touch with the culture of street performers that first helped him define himself as a musician. While he continues to play professionally at nightclubs, weddings and corporate events, he also dedicates a significant amount of time to activism and fundraising. He’s spoken at local colleges, interviewed on radio stations, marched in peaceful BLM protests and even led Vigils to honor victims of police brutality and increase awareness.
In 2020, he produced a Music Video from his original song Red March (A Protest Video). The video drew local press attention and is now being produced as an orchestral performance by multiple universities. At a Protest Vigil in Providence, Rhode Island, string musicians came from neighboring states and played the score in unity to peacefully protest police brutality and bring awareness to the 2019 killing of Elijah McClain, an unarmed black man and fellow violinist.
Big Lux continues his activism through music, lectures, and events designed to increase awareness and foster meaningful dialog. He is always looking for the next opportunity to make a difference, and always willing to embrace the challenges necessary for change.

Roomful of Blues
Saturday, November 30
Time : 8pm
Tickets: $25
ROOMFUL OF BLUES
Even though Roomful of Blues’ lineup has changed over the years, the band has always been one of the tightest, most joyful blues ensembles in the world. Currently an eight-piece unit led by guitarist Chris Vachon, the band has never sounded fresher or stronger. Singer DD Bastos brings her sweet and soulful vocals and adds another bright new dimension to the jazzy, jump-blues musical roots. Their winning combination of jump, swing, blues, R&B and soul remains their calling card, as does their ability to fill the dance floor. Along with bassist John Turner, trumpeter Chris Pratt, drummer Mike Coffey, keyboardist Jeff Ceasrine, baritone and tenor saxophonist Craig Thomas, and tenor and alto saxophonist Rich Lataille, Roomful keeps on rockin’ year after year!
Roomful of Blues, according to DownBeat magazine, “are in a class by themselves.” With their masterful combination of jumping, horn-heavy, hard-edged blues and R&B, it’s no wonder why the great Count Basie called them “the hottest blues band I’ve ever heard.” Since 1967, the group’s deeply rooted blend of swing, rock ‘n’ roll, jump, blues and soul has earned it five Grammy Award nominations and a slew of other accolades, including seven Blues Music Awards. With a non-stop performance schedule for over 55 years, Roomful of Blues has earned critical, popular and radio success and a legion of fans around the globe. including the prestigious DownBeat International Critics Poll for “Best Blues Band”.
D.D. Bastos – Vocals
DD is no stranger to the stage. She began singing in church at the age of 5 years old. Music has always been her passion. D.D. earned second chair in the All-Eastern Honors Ensemble representing Massachusetts which garnered her a scholarship.
After college D.D. began performing with local bands throughout NE which led to the inception of her band DD & The Road Kings. Her work put her closely associated with the fraternity that is; Roomful of Blues, Sugar Ray and the Bluetones, The Broadcasters and the dozens of splinter groups who have branched off -- shaping many other New England Blues bands. Certainly, when three of them show up on D.D. and the Road Kings' album Lover Bird, which was well received by critics and fans alike, there is a common thread that can be traced back to the '60s Blues revival. D.D. is also a Choral Director in the public school system with 20+ years as a private music teacher. Her love of singing is what fuels her soulful and powerful performances.
Chris Vachon - Guitar
Chris is a true multi-talent. His prowess as a guitar slinger is well documented, and his strengths as a producer and songwriter grow from album to album. He produced the band’s nine most recent albums—There Goes the Neighborhood (1998), Watch You When You Go (2001), Live at Wolf Trap (2002) the Grammy nominated That’s Right! (2003), and Standing Room Only (2004), “Raisin’ A Ruckus” (2008), Hook, Line & Sinker (2011), 45 Live (2013) and In A Roomful of Blues (2020) after co-producing all of Roomful’s other albums recorded in the ’90s. Chris’s songs— such as “Turn It On! Turn It Up!,” “Running Out of Time,” “She’ll Be So Fine,” “Blue, Blue World,” “Dynamite” and “Keep on Rockin'" have become firm favorites in AAA and bluesradio formats, bringing many new fans into the Roomful fold.
John Turner - Upright and Electric Bass
A veteran of the New England jazz scene, bassist John Turner has performed and recorded with just about everybody–specifically the Either/Orchestra,Charlie Kohlhase, Scott Hamilton, Roswell Rudd, Lee Konitz, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, members of Ornette Coleman’s band, and Magic Dick-Jay Geils and Blues Time to name a few. John’s rock solid bottom is the essential element of the swing groove which Roomful is renowned for.
Jeff Ceasrine – Piano\Organ
Originally from New York, Jeff is a multi-instrumentalist who has performed throughout the New England area on keyboards, rhythm guitar, percussion, and background vocals for over 25 years. He has worked in several long-standing acts in Rhode Island (blues, jazz, and swing) and has played many one-off gigs with various bands throughout the region. A frequent guest and on-call keyboard player with Roomful of Blues since 2008 (appearing on their recent "In a Roomful of Blues” CD), Jeff is comfortable with many different blues stylings. His influences include Pine Top Perkins, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Lonnie Smith, Otis Spann and Jimmy Smith..”
Mike Coffey - Drums
From Newport Rhode Island Mike Coffey spent 20 years performing with the US Navy band. Upon retirement he performed with local blues artist Chris Stoval Brown and other well-known blues artist in the Boston area. As part of a weekly Jazz series he has performed with Mike Renzi and Grey Sargent both members of Tony Bennett’s band and other renown jazz artist. He also performs with 50s doo wop group”The Diamonds” when they perform in New England. He
studied with renown drum instructors Alan Dawson and Gary Chaffee. Known for his versatility and ability to enhance any group he performs with he been a welcome new member of Roomful of Blues.
Rich Lataille - Tenor and Alto Sax
Rich joined Roomful in 1970 and was there at the beginning of what has become the most legendary horn section in contemporary blues. It was Rich’s interest in the swinging bands of the ’30s and ’40s that led Roomful to forge the distinctive sound that has become the band’s trademark. A man who can play both sides of the fence, lyrically tender or blisteringly hot, Rich has a big, warm tone that is always jam-packed with feeling. His melodic inventiveness reflects
the depth and breadth of his wide-ranging influences. Rich worked with various local and high-school bands before beginning his long-term relationship with Roomful.
Craig Thomas – Baritone and Tenor Sax
Craig was born in Washington DC and grew up in Maryland. At a young age Craig heard an early rock and roll instrumental “Wild Weekend” by the Rockin’ Rebels which inspired him to take up the saxophone. He moved to LA in his early 20s and played with the likes of Jim Messina of Loggins & Messina, Les McCann, Aretha Franklin, the Stylistics, Freda Payne, Jermaine Jackson the R&B Bombers among many, many others. Craig's rich musical background is a welcome asset to the Roomful of Blues horn section.
Christopher Pratt – Trumpet
Chris is a native of Rhode Island and has performed throughout the New England area with various local and national acts for over forty years. Chris recently retired as a music teacher of 37 years from Warwick Rhode Island and continues to actively teach music at Roger Williams University. Chris's pure melodic style, infectious energy, and love of the blues can be heard every time Roomful of Blues takes the stage!

From the jacket: "Maggie Stephens's stutter makes school especially hard. She will do almost anything to avoid speaking in class or calling attention to herself. So when her unsympathetic father threatens to send her away for so-called "treatment," she reluctantly agrees to her mother's intervention plan: a few weeks in the fresh air of Wildoak Forest, visiting a grandfather she hardly knows. It is there, in an extraordinary twist of fate, that she encounters an abandoned snow leopard cub, an exotic gift to a wealthy Londoner that proved too wild to domesticate. But once the cub's presence is discovered by others, danger follows, and Maggie soon realizes that time is running out, not only for the leopard, but for herself and the forest as well."

Released in 1989, Indigo Girls ‘ eponymous major label debut sold over two million copies under the power of singles “Closer to Fine” and “Kid Fears” and turned Indigo Girls into one of the most successful folk duos in history. Over a thirty-five-year career that began in clubs around their native Atlanta, Georgia, the multi-Grammy-winning duo of Emily Saliers and Amy Ray has recorded sixteen studio albums, sold over 15 million records, and built a dedicated, enduring following across the globe. Rolling Stone describes them as the “ideal duet partners.” Committed and uncompromising activists, they work on issues like immigration reform (El Refugio), LGBTQ advocacy, education (Imagination Library), death penalty reform, and Native American rights. They are co-founders of Honor the Earth, a non-profit dedicated to the survival of sustainable Native communities, Indigenous environmental justice, and green energy solutions.
Their latest record, Look Long is a stirring and eclectic collection of songs that finds the duo of Amy Ray and Emily Saliers reunited in the studio with their strongest backing band to date. “We joke about being old, but what is old when it comes to music? We’re still a bar band at heart,” says Saliers. “While our lyrics and writing approach may change, our passion for music feels the same as it did when we were 25-years-old.” “As time has gone on, our audience has become more expansive and diverse, giving me a sense of joy,” she adds. To hear those collective voices raise into one, singing along and overpowering the band itself, one realizes the importance Indigo Girls ’ music has in this moment. In our often-terrifying present, we are all in search of a daily refuge, a stolen hour or two, to engage with something that brings us joy, perspective, or maybe just calm. As one bar band once put it, “We go to the doctor, we go to the mountains…we go to the Bible, we go through the work out.” For millions, they go to the Indigo Girls. On Look Long they’ll find a creative partnership certain of its bearings, forging a way forward.

TRIVIA NIGHT
Join us for an engaging class for students ages 7 to 12. We will be reading "Wildoak" by C. C. Harrington.
In addition to reading the story, class sessions will include relevant math and science lessons and will also integrate personal finance activities. Register today!

When the curtain rises, professionally trained Eastern Connecticut Ballet dancers and guest artists Unity Phelan and Indiana Woodward of New York City Ballet share the spotlight in this nautical-themed live performance of “The Nutcracker.” Set in New London in the 1850s, the scenery celebrates southeastern Connecticut’s seafaring past and transforms the stage into a wintry day in the whaling city. Stage sets display tall ships in port, the New London Custom House, Whale Oil Row, lighthouses, and a sea captain’s Victorian home.
Tchaikovsky’s celebrated music carries the audience through an enchanting journey as Clara and her new friend, the Nutcracker, travel through a magical world of Arctic ice fields where whaling ships once ventured on harrowing voyages!

New London, CT., December 26, 2024- The City of New London and the New London NAACP will have a ceremony tonight starting at 5:00 pm at the Parade Plaza to light the Kinara for the first night of Kwanzaa. We invite the community to come out and enjoy the celebration. The colors of each candle have symbolic meanings. The black candle represents the African people, the red candles symbolize their struggles, and the green represents hope for the future. The number of candles represents the seven principles of Kwanzaa. Together, the candles are called the mishumaa saba. The candles are lit according to the numbering of the Principles: Umoja (1)- (Unity) To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race. Kujichagulia (2) - (Self-Determination) Ujima (3) - (Collective Work and Responsibility) Ujamaa (4)- (Cooperative Economics) Nia (5) - (Purpose) Kuumba (6) - (Creativity) Imani (7) - (Faith) The word kinara is a Swahili word that means candle holder. The seven candles represent the Seven Principles (or Nguzo Saba) of Kwanzaa. Red, green, and black are the symbolic colors of the holiday. During the week of Kwanzaa, a new candle is lit on the kinara each day.
