FANFARE FOR LIFE & SPRING
Williams (James Kimmo) | Fanfare for Life
Mazzoli | These Worlds in Us
Prokofiev | Piano Concerto No. 3
Adam Adov, Piano
Schumann | Symphony No. 1 (Spring)
Taking place on National Vietnam War Veterans Day, the ECSO’s March concert is named for the opening piece, Fanfare for Life, written in 1994 by Vietnam veteran and former Army Band member James “Kimo” Williams. With Gary Sinise, Williams founded the Lt. Dan Band to entertain the troops and raise funds for disabled vets. The program will continue with two haunting works from 70 years apart: These Worlds in Usof 2006 by Missy Mazzoli, Musical America’s 2022 Composer-of-the-Year, and Samuel Barber’s 1936 Adagio for Strings. Appropriately, since the day before is World Piano Day— the 88th day of the year, for the instrument’s 88 keys—the ECSO will perform Sergei Prokofiev’s excitingly modern Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Major from 1921. The soloist is Adam Adov, a Boston Conservatory at Berklee student who won the ECSO’s 2024 Instrumental Competition. Concluding the concert will be Robert Schumann’s sprightly Symphony No. 1 in B-flat Minor, known as the “Spring Symphony,” written in 1841.

We are excited to have The Patty Tuite Band return to The Packing House this season! This local/regional band with award winning musician, Patty Tuite at the helm, has been turning heads in our area with a blues vibe that just doesn't quit.
Patty Tuite is a singer/songwriter who embraces the genre of blues, jazz and rock music. Patty started at a young age listening to her mom’s piano playing of hymns, musicals and Boogie Woogie and began playing piano before the age of 5. Patty began playing guitar at 17 years old focusing on fingerpicking and rhythm and learning Folk music and singing. In those early days, she played with numerous bands honing her chops in the blues, jazz, and rock arena.
When Covid lockdown requirements started, Patty continued writing new songs and started “back-yard” practices in the summer of 2020 performing the new material and sharing videos with her fan base. This was the group that then went into the studio in December 2020-January 2021 to complete the new music for Patty Tuite “Consider This.” The recording features a fantastic array of new material by Patty. Produced by Grammy award winner Paul Nelson, who also plays electric, slide and acoustic guitar on the album, to the excited expectations of her ever growing, world-wide fan base.
"Consider This" has been featured in numerous magazine reviews, including “Making a Scene,” Blues in The South and charting for 6 weeks on Roots Music Reports top contemporary blues albums as well as charting # 171 for 2021. It charted on the Independent Blues Broadcasters Association’s top 40 in the UK. Her newest album with Bobby Rush received wide praise and has gone on to chart on Roots Music Report's top 50 Blues Albums and top 50 Contemporary Blues Albums, reaching a high of number 3.
The night will feature the Patty Tuite band with Patty Tuite, Jan Jungden, Mark Annuli, Judi Thompkins, and Peggy Ann Contos Harvey. Please, see the ticket link for artist profiles.
Join us for an evening of original music by these outstanding artists! This program is hosted by the "Eastern Connecticut Center for History, Art, and Performance" (EC-CHAP).

This group offers a sophisticated performance ranging from soaring ballads like Desperado, Wasted Time and Best of My Love, to country rockers like Lyin’ Eyes, Take It Easy and Peaceful Easy Feeling, and the heavy rockers like Victim of Love and Hotel California. With sweet vocal harmonies and jangling guitars, “ Another Tequila Sunrise ” captures the LIVE experience of the Eagles and beyond.
Eagles Tribute Band, ANOTHER TEQUILA SUNRISE has been performing to sell-out crowds all over the country for nearly twenty years. The thunderous applause and standing ovations emphasize that this group is the premier Eagles Tribute band of the USA.
ANOTHER TEQUILA SUNRISE is America’s premier Tribute to the Eagles. Since 2001, this New England based tribute band has been delighting sell-out crowds across the country with a catalog of music that encompasses the classics and deep cuts from the Eagles’ studio collection, as well as the biggest hits from the solo careers of Glenn Frey, Don Henley, and Joe Walsh.
And they do this with an unparalleled commitment to the music. Another Tequila Sunrise has gone beyond the realm of understanding “how” this music was made. Yes, their ability to recreate these iconic studio sounds does not go unnoticed; but what really sets them apart is their ability to recreate the Eagles ’ LIVE experience.
And to do that, one must understand not only “how” the music was made, but also “why”. Why does Henley alter his drumming pattern ever-so-slightly? Why does Felder choose this particular lick or passage over another? Uncovering these notions is crucial to peeling back the layers of these timeless songs, the key to improvising like an Eagle, and the secret to delivering a painstakingly authentic Eagles LIVE experience…..and this all-star lineup has it in spades.
So, do yourself a favor; grab a pair of front-row tickets, and let Another Tequila Sunrise transport you back to a warm night in the summer of ’77, on a dark desert highway, cool wind in your hair.

Caleb Hudson will astound us once again in the 34th season finale with his new ensemble, Triple Cortado, playing arrangements of standard repertoire in a miraculous trio of trumpet, trombone and piano. It might sound edgy to arrange Mendelssohn’s perfect Piano Trio in D minor, for example, for such an unlikely ensemble; again, we’re just turning the dial back to an old, common practice of arranging great music for whatever ensemble is at hand.

Puccini & Verdi | opera duets, excerpts, & overtures
featuring Eastern CT Symphony Chorus
Sarah Joyce Cooper, Soprano
Jesus Daniel Hernandez, Tenor
Okoye | Inside Is What Remains
The ECSO will tie a red-white-and-green bow around its 2024-25 season with a program of achingly romantic duets from famous Italian operas—La bohème and Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini and Il trovatore and La traviata by Giuseppe Verdi—performed by soprano Sarah Joyce Cooper and Mexican-born tenor Jesús Daniel Hernández. The Eastern Connecticut Symphony Chorus will join the orchestra for “Va, pensiero (Go, thought, on wings of gold)” from Verdi’s Nabucco, the chorus of the Hebrew slaves, an anthem of Italian unification and, later, of other oppressed peoples. A special addition to the program is a version for soprano and chorus—sung by Cooper and the ECSC—of Nkeiru Okoye’s Inside Is What Remains, with a text by the composer, commissioned by Tulsa Opera for the Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Memorial Concert in 2021. The orchestra will also play the stirring overtures to Verdi’s La forza del destinoand Luisa Miller, the triumphal march from his Aida, and the intermezzo from Puccini’s Manon Lescaut.

Special Note and "Meet & Greet": We are honored to have Musician and Film Actor Alicia Witt grace The Packing House stage this season! Her career as a TV/Film Actor and musical Performer spans nearly 4 decades. Actor and singer-songwriter Alicia Witt has been acting since the age of 7, making her film debut in David Lynch's sci-fi classic Dune. She just finished filming the thriller Longlegs, opposite Nicholas Cage, set for a worldwide theatrical release in 2024.

Her newest release is 2023’s Witness, led by the title track, which will debuted April. An Intimate Evening with Musician & Actor Alicia Witt
Artists
Triple Cortado Trio
Caleb Hudson, trumpet
Achilles Liarmakopoulos, trombone
Ahmed Alom, piano
Program Summary
Felix Mendelssohn, Trio 1 in D minor, Op. 49
Johann Strauss, Die Fledermaus Overture

Gillian Welch’s rich and remarkable career spans over twenty-five years, and she and her musical partner David Rawlings are a pillar of the modern acoustic music world. They have been hailed by Pitchfork as “modern masters of American folk” and “protectors of the American folk song” by Rolling Stone.
After moving to Nashville in the early 1990s, Welch was launched into the public consciousness when Emmylou Harris recorded a cover of Welch’s “Orphan Girl.” Her career continued to flourish as her 1996 debut Revival , produced by T Bone Burnett, was released to critical acclaim. Firmly on the roots music map following the release, Welch followed up that GRAMMY nominated album release with 1998’s Hell Among The Yearlings , a stark duet record with Rawlings, further solidifying the duo as a force in the folk music scene.
For her work as executive producer as well as a performer and songwriter on the eight times platinum O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, Welch was awarded the Album of the Year GRAMMY, and was simultaneously nominated for her own Time (The Revelator) which Rolling Stone called one of the best albums of the 2000s and is widely considered by critics to be one of the best albums of all time. This release was Welch-Rawlings’ first on their own record label, Acony Records, helping to establish the duo’s fierce commitment to independent music.

King David was the greatest king of Israel, author of the psalms, father of Solomon and noble ancestor of Our Lord. This powerful 15th century Russian prototype was originally part of the prophet’s tier of an icon screen and is kept in Moscow’s Tretyakov Gallery. This is one of the best and highest examples of the Moscow school of Russian Orthodox Iconography.
In this sacred art workshop, students will make a shoulder length copy of the face, crown and upper robe on a flat 8” x 10” gessoed wood panel. After making a careful drawing in ink, students make their own paint by mixing egg yolks with natural pigments. We parallel the model’s historical technique step by step, applying color in several successively brighter layers.
One technical challenge is the long rays of light in his crown and collar. Strong but fine calligraphic lines define the overall drawing and final system of parallel highlights in the hair, beard and face. His elderly face is creased with wisdom. Its glowing forms are revealed with several layers of softly blended transparent passages of tone, building to a full opacity in the brightest areas. Each brushstroke is accompanied with the prayer “Lord Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on me a sinner”.
All materials and tools needed to complete an icon are provided. Students attending the workshop need to arrive with basic brush skills, a familiarity with the color wheel and experience mixing colors.
This week-long workshop’s studio time lasts five consecutive days. Check in begins Sunday night at 4:30. Dinner is served at 5:30 pm for students and instructors. Dinner is followed by a workshop introduction and conference, which ends at 9:00 pm. Hands-on instruction begins early Monday morning. The last meal is lunch on Friday. The art studio will be available Friday afternoon to complete your icon.

An unexpected commission began his three decades studying historical Byzantine iconography. In 1996, the Connecticut Commission on the Arts awarded him its Painting Fellowship, which he received for a second time in 2004.
An apprenticeship grant from the CT Traditional Arts program allowed him to study for 15 years under noted Russian Orthodox icon painter Ksenia Pokrovsky, with whom he taught workshops nationally. His icons are marked by a loyalty to canonical criteria, historical materials and a high level of craftsmanship. They serve many diverse ethnic communities, building an ecumenical bridge between east and west.
His icons hang in homes and public spaces across the US, including the Franciscan University of Steubenville, The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield IL, St. Thomas More Chapel at Yale University and St Meinrad’s Seminary. the United States Council of Catholic Bishops choice his icon of “Jesus Christ the Eternal High Priest” to commemorate the year of the priest; over a million copies were printed and distributed internationally. He has restored hundreds of church statues, murals, and lectures on the importance of sacred art in American immigrant communities, which disappear with each church closing.
He has curated several exhibitions on the art and material culture of Connecticut’s Polish community and was featured in the WGBY documentary “Sharing Stories: Polish Life in Our Valley”. Interviews and articles about the iconographer have appeared in the New York Times, The Hartford Courant, CT Public Radio, The St Anthony Messenger, The Catholic Digest, Our Sunday Visitor et al. Beautiful images have a unique ability to incite our imaginations and open our hearts to the wonder of God’s creative glory. Sacred art, especially, has the power to draw us closer to God. Join us at this five-day retreat and writing class to learn an approach to spiritual journaling centered on the contemplation of sacred art. Inspired by the time-honored practices of Ignatian spirituality, we will build bridges through our own writing to the Holy Trinity and the saints. Our class resources will be images of sacred art, individual prayer time, written examples from saints and other Catholic writers, and thoughtful conversation about examples of the rich devotional literature of Catholicism. I encourage you to plan a day with about 3 1/2 hrs. class time, then unstructured time to pray, nap, write, stroll the beautiful grounds.
Check in for this week-long workshop begins Sunday night at 4:30 pm. Dinner for students and the instructor is at 5:30, followed by a workshop introduction and conference, which ends at 9:00 pm. Hands-on instruction begins Monday morning after mass. The entire workshop ends Friday at 1 PM.
