King David was the greatest king of Israel, author of the psalms, father of Solomon and noble ancestor of Our Lord. This powerful 15th century Russian prototype was originally part of the prophet’s tier of an icon screen and is kept in Moscow’s Tretyakov Gallery. This is one of the best and highest examples of the Moscow school of Russian Orthodox Iconography.
In this sacred art workshop, students will make a shoulder length copy of the face, crown and upper robe on a flat 8” x 10” gessoed wood panel. After making a careful drawing in ink, students make their own paint by mixing egg yolks with natural pigments. We parallel the model’s historical technique step by step, applying color in several successively brighter layers.
One technical challenge is the long rays of light in his crown and collar. Strong but fine calligraphic lines define the overall drawing and final system of parallel highlights in the hair, beard and face. His elderly face is creased with wisdom. Its glowing forms are revealed with several layers of softly blended transparent passages of tone, building to a full opacity in the brightest areas. Each brushstroke is accompanied with the prayer “Lord Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on me a sinner”.
All materials and tools needed to complete an icon are provided. Students attending the workshop need to arrive with basic brush skills, a familiarity with the color wheel and experience mixing colors.
This week-long workshop’s studio time lasts five consecutive days. Check in begins Sunday night at 4:30. Dinner is served at 5:30 pm for students and instructors. Dinner is followed by a workshop introduction and conference, which ends at 9:00 pm. Hands-on instruction begins early Monday morning. The last meal is lunch on Friday. The art studio will be available Friday afternoon to complete your icon.

The Lyme Art Association (LAA) is pleased to announce the opening of three compelling exhibitions on April 18, 2025: Sunflower’s Bloom, Ship to Shore: A Marine Show, and Stillness: A Still Life. These shows, running through May 29, offer a dynamic celebration of artistic expression while supporting a critical humanitarian cause.
Sunflower’s Bloom is a juried exhibition dedicated to supporting Ukraine and its people. With the sunflower—Ukraine’s national flower—as its guiding symbol, the show highlights themes of resilience, hope, and the enduring beauty that flourishes even in adversity. All entry fees will be donated to UNICEF to aid Ukrainian children and families, and a portion of sales commissions from the exhibition will also contribute to this effort. Open to all artists and juried by Jenny Parsons, Curator at the Florence Griswold Museum, the exhibition invites artists to explore themes of renewal, endurance, and light emerging from darkness.
Alongside Sunflower’s Bloom, LAA will present Ship to Shore: A Marine Show, juried by acclaimed marine artist Sergio Roffo. Open exclusively to LAA members, this exhibition celebrates the marine genre, featuring a range of subjects from tranquil harbors to turbulent seas.
Completing the trio of exhibitions is Stillness: A Still Life, a juried show overseen by artist Justin Wiest. Inspired by the introspective nature of still life painting, the exhibition invites artists to capture the quiet beauty of everyday objects, offering viewers a moment of reflection amid life’s fast pace.
The exhibitions will be on view at the Lyme Art Association, located at 90 Lyme Street in Old Lyme, CT from April 18 through May 29, 2025. The Opening Reception will take place on Friday, April 25, from 5 – 7 PM. The gallery is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday, 10 AM – 5 PM. Admission is free, and all are welcome.

The Anglican Singers present Peppino D'Agostino "Made In Italy"
A young Sicilian artist left Italy over 30 years ago, with the dream of “playing with the greatest guitarists”. Peppino has achieved his dream and he’s now firmly planted in the “who’s who” of the guitar world.
Peppino D’Agostino emerged on the acoustic guitar scene in the early 80’s as a leading member of the second wave of the great fingerstylists that helped redefine the instrument in the ’90s. His remarkable technique, penchant for open tunings, and percussive effects are the basis of his unique compositional style which has been inspiring musicians and audiences alike for decades. Add to that his natural warmth, playfulness, and broad musical tastes and you have the recipe for what he calls “minestrone music”. His virtuosity and his emotional charge have also had a significant influence on the younger generation of fingerstyle guitarists. D’Agostino continues to evolve and grow in ways that would have been hard to predict when he first showcased his melodic yet emotionally intense style on the recordings Acoustic Spirit, Close to the Heart, and Every Step of the Way which was named one of the top three acoustic guitar albums of all time by Acoustic Guitar magazine readers.
Proceeds from this concert will be used to promote the mission of the The Anglican Singers and its international tour fund. Learn more at anglicansingers.org.

Eddie Henderson is an American jazz trumpet and flugelhorn player. He came to prominence in the early 1970s as a member of pianist Herbie Hancock‘s Mwandishi band, going on to lead his own electric/fusion groups through the decade. Henderson earned his medical degree and worked a parallel career as a psychiatrist and musician, turning back to acoustic jazz by the 1990s.
Henderson was born in New York City on October 26, 1940. At the age of nine, he was given an informal lesson by Louis Armstrong, and he continued to study the instrument as a teenager in San Francisco, where he grew up, after his family moved there in 1954, at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
Henderson was influenced by the early fusion work of jazz musician Miles Davis, who was a friend of his parents. They met in 1957 when Henderson was aged seventeen.
After completing his medical education, Henderson went back to the Bay area for his medical internship and residency. It was a week-long gig with Herbie Hancock‘s Mwandishi band that led to a three-year job, lasting from 1970 to 1973. In addition to the three albums recorded by the group under Hancock’s name, Henderson recorded his first two albums, Realization (1972) and Inside Out (1973), with Hancock and the Mwandishi group.
After leaving Hancock, the trumpeter worked extensively with Pharoah Sanders, Mike Nock, Norman Connors, and Art Blakey‘s Jazz Messengers, returning to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1975 where he joined the Latin-jazz group Azteca and fronted his bands. While he gained some recognition for his work with the Herbie Hancock Sextet (1970–1973), his records were considered too “commercial”. Henderson has been on the faculty at Juillard School of Music since 2007.

Spiritual Journaling: Open the Heart with Sacred Art
Painting, drawings, and mixed media from 6 decades of creative work by self taught artist Steve Schumacher on exhibit April and May at Windham SC & HS Center, 1 Jillson Sq. Willimantic Ct.
My First 55 Years
The Lyme Art Association (LAA) is pleased to announce the opening of three compelling exhibitions on April 18, 2025: Sunflower’s Bloom, Ship to Shore: A Marine Show, and Stillness: A Still Life.

Music with Duke Robillard

Whether it's a song, a style, an idiom or an image, Duke Robillard will render it with mastery, power, nuance and an unerring grasp of its essence.
Born Michael John Robillard on October 4, 1948, in Woonsocket, R.I., Duke has carved out one of blues' most illustrious legacies, while also trodding some lofty related territories as a guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, bandleader, studio sideman, producer, label operator and educator.
After showing an early affinity for music and guitar, he founded Roomful Of Blues with pianist Al Copley in Westerly, R.I., in 1967. By adding horns, Roomful announced itself emphatically as the prototypical jump blues band, and became a New England legend and a fixture beyond, as did Duke himself.
His unsurpassed mastery of the guitar style of T-Bone Walker (later crystallized memorably in his 2004 release "Blue Mood") was deservedly heralded, but his breadth was also head-turning - from swing, standards and ballads to rockers, gutbucket Chicago blues and rockabilly.
By the time Duke left Roomful after a dozen years, he was firmly established in the upper echelon of contemporary blues guitarists. Duke went from Roomful to a stint with rockabilly revivalist Robert Gordon and then to the first iteration of the Legendary Blues Band, composed primarily of then-recent Muddy Waters sidemen.
The Duke Robillard Band debuted in 1981, re-emerging as The Pleasure Kings with their eponymous 1984 album on Rounder. It and its sequel, "Too Hot To Handle," burnished Duke's songwriting portfolio; the 1987 jazz outing "Swing" (with saxophonist Scott Hamilton) underscored his versatility and remains a highlight.
Continuing his solo career, Duke replaced Jimmie Vaughan with The Fabulous Thunderbirds in 1990. He cut his own much-awaited straight blues album "Duke's Blues" in 1993 for Canadian imprint Stony Plain, leading eventually to a rewarding, continuing and prolific alliance, along with releases during the ensuing years on Point Blank/Virgin and Shanachie, as well as instructional videos. He has also launched his own labels with Jesse Finkelstein, Blue Duchess/Shining Stone.
Duke's prolificity has included producing albums by Billy Boy Arnold, Joe Louis Walker, Rosco Gordon, Jimmy Witherspoon and Jay McShann, Zuzu Bollin, Billy Price and Otis Clay, Sunny Crownover, Bryan Lee and Al Basile as well as recording two collaborations with Herb Ellis, a pairing with his successor in Roomful, Ronnie Earl, a seat in the New Guitar Summit with J. Geils and Gerry Beaudoin, additional studio credits with Bob Dylan (the well-regarded 1997 "Time Out Of Mind"), Ruth Brown, Johnny Adams, Pinetop Perkins, Snooky Pryor, Al Copley, Todd Sharpville and Tony Z, and touring with Tom Waits in 2006.
Duke's resume is decorated with Grammy nominations, Handy Awards and Blues Music Awards, and other honors for his artistry, recordings and productions within the United States and internationally. On his latest release, "Duke Robillard and his Dames of Rhythm" on M.C. Records, he wields an acoustic archtop and joins six thrushes for evocative and enjoyable renditions of 1920s and 1930s swing tunes; it's a worthy successor to his 2016 BMA-winning "The Acoustic Blues And Roots Of Duke Robillard."
Duke remains based in Rhode Island and a whirlwind as a musician, producer, gardener and photographer. But wait, there's more: he's now creating fine art abstract paintings, too! At this point for Duke, versatility and mastery should come as anything but a surprise; it just means more richness in a superlative career for us to celebrate.
by Dick Shurman- Noted blues historian and producer
- "One of the great players" BB King
- "Robillard is a soloist of stunning force and originality." the New York Times
- "Most everything Duke Robillard has done as a guitarist during the past four-plus decades...bears witness to his musical intelligence and his dedication to his craft".- Downbeat
- "Robillard's ability to play across the spectrum of blues is legendary. Few players can move stylistically from Texas to Kansas City to Chicago's West Side, but Robillard makes it seem easy."- Guitar Player
- "A guitarist's guitarist, prolific producer, and master of all things blues, Duke Robillard walks the tightrope between traditionalism and experimentation...He's a master of many styles who moves forward while maintaining a firm grounding in the past."- Blues Revue
GRAMMY Nominations for Best Traditional Blues Album for 2010 Stomp! The Blues Tonight and 2006 Guitar Groove-a-Rama
The Blues Music Awards (formerly W.C.Handy Awards) have named Duke Robillard "Best Blues Guitarist" four years out of five (2000,2001,2003,2004) making him the second most honored guitarist for that award!
He was also nominated in that category in 2005, 2007 2008.

Tickets: $20 ($5 Service Charge Included With Online Tickets. All sales are final, no ticket refunds or exchanges. Seats are on a first-come, first-serve basis, and seats are not guaranteed with ticket purchase.)
The Sloppy Boys are a “party rock” band from LA consisting of comedians Mike Hanford, Jeff Dutton and Tim Kalpakis. Prior to forming The Sloppy Boys, all three were writer-performers on the sketch comedy show “The Birthday Boys,” produced by Bob Odenkirk, which aired on IFC.
Together, the Boys have self-released three albums, Lifelong Vacation, Dancing on the Wind, and Paradiso. Their fourth, Sonic Ranch, was produced by Money Mark (Beastie Boys, Beck) at the legendary Sonic Ranch Studios in Texas. The entire process was captured by director Robert Holguin for his feature-length comedy-rock-doc Blood, Sweat and Beers or How The Sloppy Boys Made an Album on a Farm in West Texas.
The Sloppy Boys also host a weekly cocktail-making podcast, ranked a Top 3 Comedy Podcast by Vulture. New episodes drop every Friday.

JOE ALTERMAN is an Atlanta-born jazz pianist, composer, writer, and cultural curator who channels the timeless joy of swing with youthful energy and heartfelt enthusiasm.
Praised by legends like Ahmad Jamal as "a very special artist," Les McCann as "tiny but only in stature; as a man and musician, he is already a giant," and Ramsey Lewis as "an inspiration" whose playing is "a joy to behold," Alterman has carved out a singular space in the jazz world.
A graduate of New York University with both a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Jazz Piano Performance, Alterman has performed at iconic venues including the Kennedy Center , Lincoln Center , Birdland , and Blue Note , sharing stages with jazz greats like Houston Person , Les McCann , and Ramsey Lewis. He also had the privilege of opening for Dick Gregory at the Kennedy Center, where the legendary comedian introduced him with a knowing smile and the line: “See? Integration works!”
Whether leading his trio or captivating audiences solo, Alterman’s music has been described by Downbeat Magazine as "hard-swinging" and by the late journalist Nat Hentoff as "making people smile and, if the room is right, dance." With a deep groove, bluesy touch, and an exuberance that's hard to resist , his playing is both deeply rooted and refreshingly modern. His ability to keep the spirit of swing alive has earned admiration from jazz masters. As Monty Alexander put it, “Joe Alterman is doing his part to keep alive the art of the swinging trio. He is a wonderful pianist whose playing brings smiles and good feelings to his listeners.” Similarly, Benny Green calls Alterman “absolutely one of the most musically enjoyable, swingingest jazz pianists who can be heard playing today.”
With eight critically acclaimed albums to his name, including the 2023 release Joe Alterman Plays Les McCann: Big Mo & Little Joe, Alterman continues to evolve as a recording artist while honoring jazz’s deep traditions. His swinging style and infectious enthusiasm have made him a favorite among both jazz devotees and casual listeners. As George Benson once told him, “You play good and you sound good, and there’s a difference.” That difference—the ability to channel joy, soul, and deep connection through every note—is what sets Alterman apart.
As Dick Cavett aptly said, “Joe Alterman combines outstanding musical technique with infectious enthusiasm for his work. He fills a room with joy.”
Beyond the piano, Alterman’s creative reach extends into cultural leadership and writing. As the Executive Director of Neranenah , an Atlanta-based Concert & Culture series, he celebrates Jewish contributions to music and the arts. His writing has also garnered acclaim—he has penned liner notes for three Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra albums and was the subject of Nat Hentoff’s final piece on music , in which the legendary journalist described Alterman's essays as "some of the very best on the essence and spirit of jazz." In 2025 , Alterman’s musicianship was further recognized when he was featured on President Jimmy Carter’s Grammy-winning album, Last Sundays In Plains: A Centennial Celebration , marking another milestone in his ever-expanding artistic journey.
Whether performing on world-renowned stages, leading cultural initiatives, or writing about the music he loves, Joe Alterman bridges the past and present of jazz , delivering music that, as Ramsey Lewis put it, is “happy music with tasty meat on the bones.”

After 5 decades of glorious careers playing with virtually who is who in all genres of music - jazz, fusion, rock, pop and world music, and after guesting on each other’s projects - the Levin Brothers finally decided to have their own jazz band. The band has toured all over the USA, and has performed in Canada, Mexico, El Salvador, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Japan.
Since graduating from the Eastman School of Music, Tony Levin has become the bass and Chapman Stick voice for Peter Gabriel and King Crimson. As a French Horn major, Pete Levin earned a master’s degree from the Juilliard School. In the early 70s he switched to keyboards, becoming a synthesizer specialist in the NYC recording studio scene. Over the years, he has graced hundreds of jazz and pop recordings and performances by the likes of Miles Davis, Gil Evans, Jimmy Giuffre, Dave Brubeck, David Sanborn, Joe Louis Walker, Don Elliott, Freddie Hubbard, Annie Lennox, Charles Mingus, Jaco Pastorius and Wayne Shorter. He currently records with his organ trio with Dave Stryker and Lenny White.
