Woodshop 101: Make a Cutting Board (9/23+9/30)
Have you ever seen a quilt that was so beautiful that you just HAD to make it? Well, this is that kind of quilt block. Quilter Timna Tarr made the quilt I saw, and she has generously permitted me to teach it.
This block is quick, simple, and addictively fun to make. Each striped circle becomes unique based on your fabric choices. We’ll start with muslin circles and learn the flip-and-sew technique, followed by a bit of hand sewing, gathering, pressing, and appliqué. Before you know it, you’ll have a quilt block (or two!) ready to become part of a beautiful top.
Students are welcome to bring strips of fabric, approximately 1 ½ inches wide, if they have them, but it is not necessary.
All materials are included in this class.
We will be making one quilt block together, from start to finish. Quicker workers may make more, but there is no hurry. Everyone can work at their own pace.
NOTE: Basic knowledge of a sewing machine is helpful, but not required; students can learn through the project.

Long before Bridgerton broke the Netflix algorithm, Vitamin String Quartet (VSQ) had helped establish classical crossover as a genuine force in contemporary music. Fresh off high-profile placements in Seasons 1 and 2 of the aforementioned streaming smash, VSQ has “reached a mainstream, global audience” (Variety) and “charmed the world with their classical covers” (Nylon). New York Observer wrote, “VSQ’s atmospheric hits have made classical versions of pop music cool.”
On their latest tour, VSQ have created fresh arrangements of the cultural phenomenon that is Taylor Swift, performing spellbinding and innovative renditions of Swift’s music, alongside familiar hits from Billie Eilish, BTS, Bridgerton, The Weeknd to Daft Punk.
VSQ are one of the most popular string ensembles in the world with over 2 billion streams and seven albums charting on both Billboard Classical and Classical Crossover charts.

The story of “Little by Little,” the new album by Ward Hayden & The Outliers, began like so many Bruce Springsteen songs do: in a car with the radio on, hurtling down a highway, headed for distant destinations. But in this instance a voice of sour rhetoric ignited Hayden’s desire to balance the scale with the pursuit of something unifying, constructive, and positive. Unfortunate statements made by a fellow Massachusetts Country artist that directed their audience NOT to listen to Bruce Springsteen kicked off what became a two year recording project that has resulted in an impressive collection of meaningful Springsteen-penned songs that connect us through the acknowledgement, acceptance, and celebration of our hardships and triumphs. Songs the Outliers perform with soul and passion, showcasing the meaningfulness of what unites us, and the ties that bind us together through the perseverance of the enduring human spirit.
An impressive endeavor that was two years in the making, Ward Hayden and The Outliers wound up with a clutch of 16 finished Springsteen songs, all interpreted Outliers-style, that they decided to split down the middle into two separate, yet thematically linked albums. Their respective release dates will coincide with the Outliers always-busy touring schedule so fans will have fresh, new music to latch onto live and on record. “Little by Little” drops first on April 18th, with the second installment, “Piece by Piece” (both titles are gleaned from Springsteen’s lyrics to “Racing In The Street”) due later this year, right around the time the band heads for Europe & Scandinavia.
As any fan of this prolific Massachusetts-born band knows, the music on “Little by Little” is outfitted in the inimitable Outliers’ style. That is, to say, with a marvelously e?ective, updated dose of Country & Western flavor. All told, the musicianship here is so comfortably tight you could bounce a jukebox quarter o? of it. Of course, the sonic package is topped o? by the Outliers’ calling card and ace-in-the-hole: Hayden’s emotionally resonant, supremely silken vocals. It’s a voice that, in the span of a verse or a moment, can e?ortlessly summon the highest of spirits or sink the saddest of hearts. And as if that wasn’t enough to draw listeners in, for “Little by Little,” Hayden even taught himself to play harmonica, which you can hear augment the wistful, twin elegies of “Used Cars” and “Promised Land,” the latter of which is slated to be the album’s first single. Taken together, what the whole shebang sounds and feels like, unmistakably, is nobody but Ward Hayden & the Outliers.
“Well, you can’t out Boss The Boss,” says Hayden, who spent his formative years on the South Shore listening to Springsteen and watching Bruce’s videos on MTV. “We had always felt a little intimidated about trying to tackle his songs because some of them are so iconic. We knew that if we were gonna do them, we had to play them the way we play our music, and that was the first challenge.”
“We chose the songs that meant something to us,” Ward says of the selection process. “A lot of the songs have been the soundtrack to growing up – back when you were hanging out with your friends in the kitchen, songs you’d listen to while driving home from school, or during the course of you just living your life. And with this collection, I felt we were able to say some things that I’ve not been able to say myself yet in my own work, and here we were able to cover some important and meaningful ground that I’ve been wanting to cover.”

The Connecticut Paranormal Research Team (CTPRT) will be doing an interactive paranormal presentation in the taproom. The team will discuss investigations and show evidence of paranormal cases that they have participated in over the years; which includes actual audio, video and still photos.
About the CTPRT:
Established in 2000 and based out of Northeastern, CT, CTPRT is a volunteer research group headed by Christine and Daniel Peer. Christine having 40 years of experience in the field has given the goal of the organization to use a scientific approach to investigate and document paranormal phenomena to determine whether the residence and/or establishments are in fact haunted. By using equipment to detect, communicate with, and capture evidence of paranormal activity, they also try to find natural causes for what may be perceived as paranormal activity before jumping to the conclusion that a place is haunted.
Besides investigations, the team has participated in many presentations and Expo’s across the northeast and appeared on many internet/radio stations, TV broadcast, and motion pictures; as well as producing their own broadcasted and pre-recorded internet cases.

This beginner-friendly class is an introduction to the relief process, the technique used in the oldest forms of printmaking. By creating a single-color linocut print, you will learn the basics of relief printing. We will explore types of carving blocks, inks, and papers, and you will learn how to prepare your carving block, transfer your design, and carve and ink the block. You will make several prints, both by hand printing and using the printing press. (After this class, members will be certified to use the press for relief printing.)
Please read through the relief printing handout (found here) before class, and bring a simple design no larger than 5x8 inches. A good beginner design has a bold image, thick lines, and no fine details. Keeping it simple will help you avoid frustration and allow you to focus on the fundamentals of printmaking. You can find some great ideas by searching for free black and white vector art. Several design options will also be available to choose from in class.
Certification for Members: Printing Press Members who demonstrate proper use of the printing press can be certified for independent access to the tool.
Thanks to generous donations from The Frank Loomis Palmer Foundation , prices of our certification classes are greatly reduced.

Liz Glazer
Liz Glazer is an award-winning standup comedian, actor, and writer. Liz won first place in the Boston Comedy Festival and Ladies of Laughter Competition, has been featured in a full article in the Wall Street Journal (as well as Above the Law, Lex Magazine, the Pennsylvania Gazette, and other publications), and has opened for Myq Kaplan and Maria Bamford. Liz was also a part of the Seattle International Comedy Competition and will be a part of the upcoming HBO Women in Comedy Festival. As an actor, Liz has appeared on ABC’s FOR LIFE and CBS’s BULL, and is on the faculty at Lesly Kahn & Co., the Los Angeles acting studio. Liz is also writing a television pilot about her life, a draft of which was a semi-finalist in the Stage 32 writing competition.
Liz began her career as most standup comedians do: as a tenured law professor. Liz attended the University of Pennsylvania, receiving her B.A. magna cum laude and M.A. in Philosophy ( Liz submatriculated into the graduate division so she earned both degrees in 4 years). Liz then attended the University of Chicago Law School where she was a member of the Law Review. After working as a transactional real estate lawyer at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP, the New York Law firm, Liz went on to teach law and get tenure from Hofstra University’s Maurice A. Deane School of Law, and also visited at other law schools such as Northwestern University Law School and Loyola University Chicago School of Law. While she was a law professor, Liz published law review articles in the Northwestern University Law Review, the Georgetown Law Journal, the Harvard Journal of Law & Gender, the Columbia Law Review Sidebar, the University of Pennsylvania Law Review PENNumbra, among other journals. AND THEN, Liz gave it all up to do comedy, where her material draws from her own life as a lesbian, a rabbi’s wife, and a former lawyer.
These days Liz performs regularly at comedy clubs and festivals. Liz also does private events for law schools, law firms, synagogues, and major corporations. While Liz loves performing live in person, she’s equally comfortable yelling into her laptop on Zoom as she did nightly during the pandemic

Around 2008, musician/vocalist Amie Coffey having recently moved to Westerly RI from Alabama, met local guitarist/vocalist Gene Parise and they formed the acoustic duo WHEELHOUSE, performing weekly downtown and regionally to an ever growing crowd of fans. Soon after, Carl Franklin, a highly respected musician from New London joined them making Wheelhouse into a trio. They often expanded into a full electric band, joined by percussionists including the late Art Falconi, Matt Covey, and Kenneth Serio along with keyboard players Al LaPorte and Jay Franklin. They continued to perform both as a full band or acoustically for about 10 years. During that time Amie’s notoriety as a powerful, soulful dynamic vocalist grew as she performed with the Franklin Brothers Band, Sunday Gravy, Hope Road and Green Tea. On this night, Gene and Amie will be joined by bassist Dan Corbett from the band Glaucoma Suspect. Although Amie continues to now reside in Alabama, she does return to visit our area where her name has earned her a legendary reputation in the region.

What’s It Like?
Do you wish you could have more of the kinds of conversations you have late at night where for some reason, you feel safe talking about the things you actually care about?
Bring your friends (or come by yourself) and spend your Wednesday night at an event where you know everyone else is there for the same reason.
We'll be offering "big talk" conversational prompts on them to get you started, and we'll have lots of structure to make sure that you actually talk to people and that it's not awkward. Not feeling like answering a particular question? No worries, we'll have plenty to choose from, like, "When are you the happiest?" and, "If you were going to become close friends with me, what would I need to know about you?" We'll give you ground rules to make sure you feel comfortable and safe sharing as much of yourself as possible while still feeling in complete control of how much you divulge.
There will be food and drinks available for sale!
Check-in for this event will begin around 6:15 pm. Please do your best to arrive before 6:30 pm so we can begin as close to on time as possible.
Skip the Small Talk is dedicated to providing an inclusive, welcoming environment for everyone. Check out our safety policy here: tinyurl.com/ststSafety
